An appropriate time to pay tribute to this man
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 11:31 PM by LiberalFighter

Senator Ervin made a deep impact on American history through his work on two separate committees at the beginning and ending of his career that were critical in bringing down two powerful opponents: Senator Joe McCarthy in 1954 and President Richard M. Nixon in 1974. The Senate Select Committee to Investigate Campaign Practices, which investigated Watergate, was popularly known as the "Ervin Committee."

3. "Just a country lawyer" My Ass
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 12:08 AM by rwenos
I was a big fan of Senator Sam in 1974 -- LOVED the guy. He fought the Godless Nixonians by out-folksy-ing them, by out-thinking them, and by his total command of the Constitution.

Imagine my surprise, when I read his opinions 10 years later, when I was in law school. Before he was elected to the Senate, he was CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE NORTH CAROLINA SUPREME COURT.

On edit: ASSOCIATE justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. (Thanks, wikipedia.) :-)

"Just a country lawyer." Probably chuckling in his grave just now, thinking out he slipped that one in on those damned Yankees.

4. I used to watch the TV news , hoping to see him.
Reporters loved to catch him. He was very entertaining and charming, I thought. Had a good mind and great wit. Senator Dirksen was another who seemed to catch reporters eyes. Of course those were the days when there were reporters.
