7. Rat poison

Rat poison has a pretty distinctive symptom pattern. Shouldn't have taken long to figure out that was what the reason was. Could take a while to pinpoint the source though.

It's actually a chemotherapy drug, aminopterin. The antidote in humans is leucovorin, but it's taken them so long to find the culprit that most very sick animals are beyond help.

I can't imagine why they'd adulterate wheat with this stuff when warfarin (the stuff in D-Con) is usually cheaper, and I can't imagine why they'd sell a large quantity of adulterated wheat for consumption.

This is a close call, folks. If it had been sold to anyone but a pet food company, it would have been sold as food for humans. We'd be talking about dying children, at the very least.

There is going to be international fallout from this one. As I understand it, Chinese wheat is sold worldwide. It's a distinct possibility that some sold in other countries was poisoned, too.

It acts completely differently in humans. Causing abortions, failed abortions where the resulting child is severely damaged, other results but not necessarily kidney failure. We don't know that we aren't eating it.
