Edwards Discourages Sympathy Vote

WASHINGTON (AP) -- John Edwards says voters shouldn't throw him their support just because his wife has cancer.

''Do not vote for us because you feel some sympathy or compassion for us. That would be an enormous mistake,'' Edwards told CBS' ''60 Minutes'' in an interview airing Sunday night. ''The vote for the presidency is far too important for any of those things to influence it.''

Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, who has been diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer, defended his decision to remain in the race. She said she couldn't live with denying him the chance to be president.

''That would be my legacy, wouldn't it, Katie?'' according to a transcript of the interview with Katie Couric, which was taped Saturday in Las Vegas and released Sunday before broadcast. ''That I'd taken out this fine man from -- from the possibility of -- of giving a great service. I mean, I don't want that to be my legacy,'' Edwards said.

1. Elizabeth openly talking @ her cancer is having a 'benefit' ...
that I think she would approve - our local tv stations have been pointing out:

That others w/cancer don't always have the necessary health care options to treat it.

That Edwards is presenting a very good plan to deal w/that.

That NO repubs showed up for the health care forum(?not sure of the format, but forum will do?), but the top Dems DID appear.

That health care is an over-riding worry/concern for the American public.

The Edwards putting her cancer up front & in the open has created an opportunity to have a focus & dialog on the health care lottery in this country in way way that I don't recall having EVER seen before.

I hate that she has to deal w/this scourge.

I love the woman for using it to enlighten & try to help the rest of us.

I don't see a sympathy vote here, but a vote FOR someone that is walking the talk. I haven't made my call for the primaries, yet. But watching this has made me pay VERY close mind to the Edwards campaign. I am pleased to see them face this head-on, & I am frankly shocked to see the local stations starting to frame it as a national 'problem'. I'm in the deep, red heart of the conservative part of Calif - & last night I was stunned to see them talking @ the Edwards campaign (& by extension, the Democrats) as the ones that are there to change it up ... & that the repubs don't wanna talk @ it. That's big stuff here!
