Hagel: Some see impeachment as option
With his go-it-alone approach on Iraq, President Bush is flouting Congress and the public, so angering lawmakers that some consider impeachment an option over his war policy, a senator from Bush's own party said Sunday.

.

GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record) of Nebraska, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a frequent critic of the war, stopped short of calling for Bush's impeachment. But he made clear that some lawmakers viewed that as an option should Bush choose to push ahead despite public sentiment against the war.

"Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed — if a president really believes that, then there are — what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that," said Hagel, who is considering a 2008 presidential run.

.

On Sunday, Hagel said he was bothered by Bush's apparent disregard of congressional sentiment on Iraq, such as his decision to send additional troops. He said lawmakers now stood ready to stand up to the president when necessary.

1. I hope Hagel runs, and it is NOT because I agree with his position on social issues
It is because if he is a canidate just like Dennis Kucinish, it will FORCE the other canidates to take a position on IRAQ

3. Good point.
I think it's a good sign when some in both parties are chattering about impeachment. At the very least it should keep Bush in check? I HOPE.

Has there be any polls done on impeachment lately? I can't understand why the dems are so afraid to take this on. The repubs took on Clinton over something very petty. This is huge, as Dean says, worse than watergate. WTF is going on over there? What does it take to impeach?

I don't care if we get Cheney, I don't care if it takes up valuable time. This is about important principles. About telling the world, our Constitution is not just an old musty document, but rules we live by,and expect our leaders to abide by.

Bush has run roughshod over the Constitution, we owe it to future generations to stand up and say NO MORE! Maybe there wouldn't be enough votes in the Senate to impeach him, but at least it would be on the historical record, the people tried to rid themselves of this cabal.

Stumbling off my soap box now! ;^)

11. I think we want more than a show? If we allow evidence to be presented
to the public, we may get the votes to remove?

4. if we want impeachment to happen,
the call will have to come from the GOP. Our Dems are too frightened of being called "witch hunters" to do anything on their own.

8. There not afraid
They just see the writing on the wall, they know they don't have the votes to take this all the way and there not going forward. As for when the GOP did it, they just did it out of spite cause they all lothe Clinton, they didn't flat out care if they had the votes or now they wanted to embrarass clinton and the Democrats no matter what, the Lewinsky thing came out and they wanted to throw the book at him.

They fell flat on there face doing it.

13. He would have to run as an Indy, because I'm not sure
the best way to launch a Republican Prez campaign is to go on national TV and suggest impeachment as an option to deal with your own party's President--how will that fly, LOL!

10. I just send Mr. Hagel a note telling him to pass the Iraq funding bill
and not vote "no" because of a triviality that he calls a fake date for re-deployment. (that is not the term her used....either way it is a stupid reason to vote "no" because our soldiers and veterans need the money YESTERDAY!

15. Hagel is way to close to ES& S and DRE vote fraud
for me to trust him. Little George was elected, anointed is a better word, via vote fraud. That makes the two vote fraud buddies. Impeach is a beautiful word and certainly the Executive engaging a new enemy without being directed by Congress to do so is impeachable. The Commander in Chief is the Commander in Chief only when our military is called by Congress in to Service. Congress has the power and responsibility to call our military in and out of Service, not the Executive. Article 6 of the US Constitution states the US Constitution exist pursuant to members of the Executive and Congress keeping their Oath of Office. Don't keep your Oath of Office US Constitution becomes null and void - No Taxes, No Salaries, No Military - the power to rule reverts back to the people and the USA is in a state of Civil War.
