Rep. Inglis of South Carolina under fire for breaking with Bush on Iraq
By James Rosen
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Five weeks after Rep. Bob Inglis broke with his party and his president to vote against the U.S. troop surge in Iraq, the South Carolina Republican is engaged in an all-out effort to save his seat.

Inglis, one of 17 House Republicans who opposed the troop increase, is sending his constituents multiple mailings, calling local GOP activists, even posting an unusual video of himself explaining his vote on his congressional Website.

Saying he feared the surge “would actually send the wrong message to the Iraqi leadership,” Inglis explains that the United States should set deadlines for specific political goals such as sharing oil revenues among different sects and enshrining a commitment to religious pluralism in the new Iraqi constitution.

The Iraqis, he concludes, must “start taking responsibility for their country.”

Inglis has good reason to do some serious damage control back home because of his opposition to sending 30,000 more U.S. troops to Iraq.

His 4th congressional district is among the most conservative in the country. His own county party chairman is encouraging Republicans to challenge Inglis in the June 2008 primary.

1. It would be a tough battle, and would fave to be won by a Dem
few if any of us would like because he/she would have to be rt of center to win there, but wouldn't it be GREAT if ew could put this district in the Dem column anyway?

3. If its one of the most conservative districts in the country,
I doubt it will go dem unless its Zell Miller, which in my case, I would prefer a republican just keep his seat there if he opposes bush

4. Not necessarily a Zell. I would think more like a Nelson, or
(gasp) a Lieberman. Right enough to be attractive, but still rational enough to vote Dem on some issues.

And Believe me. I live in North Ga. and I wouldn't wish a Zell on anyone!!!!!!

2. Sucks to be a Republican with a conscience and good judgement.
He'll pay for his common sense.

5. He'll pay for that. Hagel does here in Nebraska. The GOP tolerates
absolutely no dissent, and they will not hesitate to eat their own to protect the "purity" of their gene pool.
