Hillary Outflanks W.on Iran--On the Right
So Hillary Clinton, presidential candidate, is trying to outflank W. to the right. In her speech yesterday, Ms. Clinton lambasted the Bush administration – not for its threats against Iran, but for weakness. In particular, she hit the administration for going along with the European-led negotiations over Iran’s nuclear research, accusing Bush of “outsourcing” U.S. Iran policy.

Here’s Hillary on Iran yesterday, speaking at Princeton:

I believe that we lost critical time in dealing with Iran because the White House chose to downplay the threats and to outsource the negotiations. I don't believe you face threats like Iran or North Korea by outsourcing it to others and standing on the sidelines. But let's be clear about the threat we face now: A nuclear Iran is a danger to Israel, to its neighbors and beyond. The regime's pro-terrorist, anti-American and anti-Israel rhetoric only underscores the urgency of the threat it poses. U.S. policy must be clear and unequivocal. We cannot and should not — must not — permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. In order to prevent that from occurring, we must have more support vigorously and publicly expressed by China and Russia, and we must move as quickly as feasible for sanctions in the United Nations. And we cannot take any option off the table in sending a clear message to the current leadership of Iran — that they will not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons.

Cynics might say it’s the latest in a long line of Hillaryspeak that positions her for her 2008 bid, protecting her right flank against charges of weakness on national defense. But I don’t think so. I think she really believes this stuff, and that her continual alliance with warmongering Sen. John McCain on issues like this (McCain also called for sanctions yesterday) is a sign that Hillary is indeed a right-leaning true believer.

Her Iraq position is virtually indistinguishable from that of Bush, and yesterday she once again railed against the idea of a Murtha-style withdrawal. “There are no quick, no easy solutions to the situation we find ourselves in today.” she said. “I do not believe that we should allow this to be an open-ended commitment without limits or end, nor do I believe that we can or should pull out of Iraq immediately.”

Why are you talking about an immediate pullout being bad? That's NOT what is being suggested! How about suggesting we move to the perimeters? THIS is what Murtha suggested a very long time ago.

Hey, even a well-known pacifist like Hillary is going to sound tough when they're running for President.

27. Hillary....
... could push the nuclear launch button on live TV and you'd still come up with absurd nuggets like "known pacifist".

Really, you aren't just wrong, you are 180 degrees wrong.

6. Gee what a surprise...distortion from the left..no right...no left...on Hillary
Her position on Iran is exactly the same as virtually every other Democratic candidate, and is not indistinguishable from Bush's....

In fact her position on Iran is the responsible position, and one we criticize Bush for not taking with regard to Iraq...

It starts with DIRECT..repeat DIRECT...diplomatic engagement with Iran...a position the Bush administration most certainly does not advocate...

Funny how the left wingy blogs all use each other for evidence...ignoring or distorting the actual facts...

7. Perhaps we could actually do something that makes sense and get out of Iraq
Perhaps we should look ahead and make rational decisions that are based on facts rather than the media's presentation of facts? Iran is not a threat.

8. Iran is most certainly a potential threat...
They have all but announced their intention to acquire nuclear weapons...diplomatic negotiation combined with international pressure and consensus, are the way to prevent Iran from continuing their effort to acquire them...the exact plan Hillary is advocating...

22. They have announced they aren't seeking nuclear weapons. No one has any
evidence that they are.

We have a lot of chest pounding like what got us into Iraq. Got any evidence?

Yes I'm concerned. Hillary is a threat to world peace, unfortunately. but that's who she is.

Her acquiescences to the bush analysis of the threat factor (both in Iraq and on Iran)is dangerous and repeatedly shown to be prone to crucial errors in judgment which have resulted in poor outcomes for the US, not to mention Iraq and the world.

When Chaney bellows that we aren't leaving Iraq, period, he knows what he's talking about. He knows that Senator Clinton backs him up on this stance. Chaney knows there will be permanent bases in permanently occupied Iraq and that Senator Clinton strongly backs him up on this, too. Just goes to show you Chaney isn't as dumb as we might think.

Or we aren't as smart as we might think. Something like that.

As an American, I'm opposed to an American Empire. It's a bad deal for us and for the world. The people pushing empire, are, by definition, selling out the republic. You can't have both.

17. Here is what I blogged about Mme. Clinton and the cluster bomb fiasco back in September.
http://screechingrats.wordpress.com/2006/09/09/suffer-the-little-children-cluster-bombs-and-the-us-senate/

Just think of those bright shiny balls for kids to play with and detonate every time one thinks of Mme. Clinton. I see she might wish them to rain down on Teheran now.

And yes, I will admit to being a Latter Day Puritan, a barn burner and a tofu thrower who idolizes Dennis and Bernie. But I am a Democrat. I am pragmatic, but not a martyr for Mme. Clinton's ambition. I had rather see the other candidates run in her stead, and make no bones about it.

Sometimes one vote is enough for a politician to show their stripes, and Madame has enough stripes for a good sized zebra or tiger in my opinion.

This is my rant and I'm sticking to it...class warfare and "anti-Israel" taunts be damned! I'm a Progressive Democrat and neither make nor need any excuses for my candidates' votes.

23. "The director of Human Rights Watch’s arms division, Steve Goose, said...
the first Feinstein-Leahy push failed “primarily because it was depicted as an anti-Israel amendment.” Advocates of the new bill have begun outreach to Jewish-American groups to tamp down any misperceptions that the measure targets Israel, he added.

Having said that, her hawkishness is pretty disturbing, and with little doubt is designed to try to counter the long-held perception of Dems being soft on national security.

18. Some good. Some bad.
I think it is right to point out that Bush should have directly engaged in negotiations. Frankly, I think his stubbornness was intentional because they see an upside in negotiations not working. Makes for a bigger bogeyman. That it amps up the danger in the world is an unfortunate side effect for them.

The bad is that she then shakes the bogeyman in our faces too! I'm sick of fear mongering. But, you have to keep in my the politics of it too.

19. So is Hillary for or against nuking Iran?
Sounds like all options are on the table. What part of all options excludes nukes?

Seems to me that if a Dem does the dirty work, some Hillary folks will say it would be a good Democratic nuclear bomb and it would be ok. Of course, if it were a Republican nuclear bomb, of course it would be just awful.

So Hillary votes for the IWR, doesn't ever say it was the wrong thing to do, now is talking tough on Iran. Am I supposed to be looking forward to four more years of the same, except now under a Democratic label?

Sad.
