Gonzales Says He May ‘Find Out’ That Attorneys Were Purged For Political Reasons

In an interview tonight, NBC News’ Pete Williams asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a simple question: “Can you be certain that none of these U.S. Attorneys were put on that list for improper reasons?”

Gonzales wouldn’t give a straight answer, and in fact left open the possibility that attorneys were fired for partisan politics. “If I find out that, in fact, any of these decisions were motivated, the recommendations to me were motivated for improper reasons to interfere with the public corruption case, there will be swift and — there will be swift and decisive action. I can assure you that.”

Gonzales also suggested that other evidence of his personal involvement in the firings may come to light. “(T)here may have been other conversations about specifically about the performance of US attorneys” that I don’t remember, he said.

Watch it at link:

Gonzales bemoaned critics who are questioning his credibility. “Let me begin with the attacks on my credibility, which really have pained me and my family. You know, I have grown up — I grew up with nothing but my integrity.” This coming from a man whose early career as counsel to then-Gov. George W. Bush included helping to get Bush excused from jury duty, “a situation that could have required the governor to disclose his then-secret 1976 conviction for drunken driving in Maine.”

2. smarmy, like his boss. evasive, like Darth. not very smart. like all of the above
In the same way that I constantly wonder how the boy who would be king became president, the same emotional response arises every time I see Gonzo talk. Talk about a pathetic performance.

I can only imagine how his US tour of US Attorneys is going:

"Now, you realize that no politics is involved. Right? RIGHT? Right. And you realize that all of your decision at the DOJ were based on law, not my direct orders or Sampson's or Goodling's suggestions. RIGHT? I didn't hear you. RIGHT? And if asked why you personally chose to prosecute 12x as many Democrats as GOPers, what is your answer? No, Repeat after me.
'That's where we saw the evidence leading.' Say it again. And again. OK, you still have a job. Congrats. The PResident sends his love and blessings."

The chance of Gonzo "finding out" that the firings were political is about the same as the chance of O.J. finding the real killer.

Embattled AG now accused in teen sex scandal 'cover-up'
Attorney General Gonzales among officials who allegedly ignored abuse of minor boys

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, both already under siege for other matters, are now being accused of failing to prosecute officers of the Texas Youth Commission after a Texas Ranger investigation documented that guards and administrators were sexually abusing the institution's teenage boy inmates.

Among the charges in the Texas Ranger report were that administrators would rouse boys from their sleep for the purpose of conducting all-night sex parties.

Ray Brookins, one of the officials named in the report, was a Texas prison guard before being hired at the youth commission school. As a prison guard, Brookins had a history of disciplinary and petty criminal records dating back 21 years. He retained his job despite charges of using pornography on the job, including viewing nude photos of men and women on state computers.

The Texas Youth Comission controversy traces back to a criminal investigation conducted in 2005 by Texas Ranger Brian Burzynski. The investigation revealed key employees at the West Texas State School in Pyote, Texas, were systematically abusing youth inmates in their custody.

>more including how Gonzales's possible involvement and the political "how's and why's" this was allowed to happen.

16. Yeah, that's how I see it....
...a question to which for Gonzo there is no good answer. Either he was so incompetent he was out of the loop or he was involved. Neither one of those results is good. So either way....he goes.

10. That sounds familiar.....
"If there's a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is," Bush told reporters at an impromptu news conference during a fund-raising stop in Chicago, Illinois. "If the person has violated law, that person will be taken care of.

"I welcome the investigation. I am absolutely confident the Justice Department will do a good job.

"I want to know the truth," the president continued. "Leaks of classified information are bad things."

He added that he did not know of "anybody in my administration who leaked classified information."

13. The shadeist of lawyers waits until the "word is out on the street"
before they confess to things. That's why those of us who know secrets, must take a risk and tell them to the public. Because at the point where the evidence is over-whelming, that's when they begin to realize that not even their own will protect them against the public collective wrath.
