Can the President delegate his pleasure?
Cuz if he can't, then the whole mess ultimately goes right back to his lap, no?

1. He's delegated his pleasure to Jeff Gannon from time to time.
I'll bet he really enjoys that!

3. actually, it was Congress that did the delegating
Even prior to the Patriot Act provision changing the interim appointment of US Attorneys, the law was that the AG could make an interim appointment. The difference was that it was time-limited to 120 days (although there is some case law suggesting that the same appointment could be made over and over to extend the 120 days) or the nomination of a permanent replacement by the president (in the absence of a pres appointment or a new 120 day appointment, the district court could appoint an interim, again without senate confirmation).

Ultimately, then, it is up to the pres to fire someone, but the authority to appoint has been delegated. As a technical matter, no one was 'fired' -- they were asked to resign by the AG. I don't see any problem with that. If any of them had refused to submit their resignations, then any "firing" of them would have to be done by the president. I don't think he could delegate that authority, although I can't swear to it.

Hard to dodge this one! he should have learned from the Rummy debacle that his "support" is not unassailable.
