The Politics of Cypress Mulch
This winter I chatted with several of my neighbors asking them not to buy cypress mulch this spring. I said we needed the cypress trees to remain in the Louisiana Wetlands helping to hold the coast together and offering a modicum of protection instead of in our landscape. Yesterday my neighbor, a bible thumping, bush backing, flag waver (and very polite) bought 80 bags of cypress mulch. I asked him if hardwood or pine mulch would have worked as good. He said the stuff he bought was already bagged up so he saw no harm and "besides, the trees will grow back." I wished him a good day and went on my way choosing not to argue with the obtuse about the laws of supply and demand. The cypress trees continue to be harvested and the State of Louisiana continues to shrink.
