CNN: Military Sources Respond To McCain’s Escalation Remark With ‘Laughter Down The Line’

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told radio host Bill Bennett that President Bush’s escalation is working. “There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today,” he said. Today, when CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked McCain why Americans still aren’t able to safely leave the Green Zone in Iraq, the senator replied that Blitzer was giving three-month-old talking points:

General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee. I think you oughta catch up. You are giving the old line of three months ago. I understand it. We certainly don’t get it through the filter of some of the media.

But according to CNN reporter Michael Ware, who has been in Iraq for four years, McCain is “way off base.” He stated, “To suggest that there’s any neighborhood in this city where an American can walk freely is beyond ludicrous. I’d love Sen. McCain to tell me where that neighborhood is and he and I can go for a stroll.”

Ware also rebutted McCain’s assertion that Petaeus travels in an unarmed humvee: “n the hour since Sen. McCain’s said this, I’ve spoken to military sources and there was laughter down the line. I mean, certainly the general travels in a humvee. There’s multiple humvees around it, heavily armed.” Watch it at link:

Digg It!

Transcript:

BLITZER: Sen. John McCain suggests that is crackdown is already working. I asked him about that in the last hour.

: Here’s what you told Bill Bennett on his radio show on Monday. “There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today. The U.S. is beginning to succeed in Iraq.”

Everything we hear if you leave the so-called Green Zone, the international zone, and you go outside of that secure area, relatively speaking, you’re in trouble if you’re an American.

: That’s where you ought to catch up on things, Wolf. General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee. I think you oughta catch up. You are giving the old line of three months ago. I understand it. We certainly don’t get it through the filter of some of the media. But I know for a fact that much of the success we’re experiencing, including the ability of Americans in many parts. Not all, we have a long, long way to go. We’ve only got two of the five brigades here to go into some neighborhoods in Baghdad in a secure fashion.

BLIZTER: Sen. John McCain, a Republican presidential candidate speaking here in The Situation Room within the past hour. Let’s go live to Baghdad right now. CNN’s Michael Ware is standing by. Michael, you’ve been there for four years, you’re walking around Baghdad on a daily basis. Has there been this improvement that Sen. McCain is speaking about?

WARE: Well, I’d certainly like to bring Sen. McCain up to speed if he ever gives me the opportunity. And if I have any difficulty hearing you right now Wolf, that’s because of the helicopters circling overhead and the gun battle that is blazing away just a few blocks down the road. Is Baghdad any safer? Sectarian violence, one particular type of violence, is down. But none of the American generals here on the ground have anything like Sen. McCain’s confidence. I mean, Sen. McCain’s credibility now on Iraq, which has been so solid to this point, is now being left out hanging to dry. To suggest that there’s any neighborhood in this city where an American can walk freely is beyond ludicrous. I’d love Sen. McCain to tell me where that neighborhood is and he and I can go for a stroll.

And to think that Gen. David Petraeus travels this city in an unarmed humvee? I mean, in the hour since Sen. McCain’s said this, I’ve spoken to military sources and there was laughter down the line. I mean, certainly the general travels in a humvee. There’s multiple humvees around it, heavily armed. There’s attack helicopters, predator drones, sniper teams, all sorts of layers of protection. So, no, Sen. McCain is way off base on this one.

2. Just saw Ware kicking McCain in his teeth.....
Ware said that McCain was totally out of wayyyy off base! Hahahaha!

Also glad that CNN finally brought McCain down to earth in line with "other" veterans of the Vietnam era instead of making him appear to be "better" than the others (Clark, McClellan, Hagel, Webb). Wolf asked why did all of the other Vets in disagreement with him and his take on Iraq? Bout damn time for McCain to be given the same treatment everyone else gets!

3. Perhaps McCain should fly to Bagdhad and go for that walk himself
and prove to us how safe it is.

6. "Delusional"? I think it's called "lying".
When caught, liars invariably try to hide behind incompetence ("i didn't know", "i don't recall" etc).

5. Why would McCain feel he could lie blatantly about this?
so easily to verify or refute - why would McCain be so foolish?

7. Maybe it's because Giuliani is kicking his ass in the polls.
On average, Giuliani is running 33.4% compared to McCain's 17.6%.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/

At one time conventional wisdom was that McCain would be the next Publican nominee. But he hitched to what he thought was a star, and it turned out he is chained to an anchor. Junior's average approval rating is 34.5%. At the same point in their 8 year terms in office Saint Gipper and Clinton were both running about 70%. Nixon didn't make it this far but he ended up at 25%. Junior might eventually break Tricky Dick's record - but maybe not due to the indoctrinated 30% or so who would still love him if he were caught selling coke to kindergarteners with bin Laden.

After his triumphant return from his 'Horray for the Escallation Tour' with his pal Lieberman, seeing some improvement in Iraq right now is pretty much a matter of political life and death for McCain, insofar as the presidential nomination is concerned. I figure it is due to this pressure that he jumped the shark bigtime.

9. He's playing to the brain-dead 28%
In this country that watches fox news and wants everything in Iraq to be going great. Of course, he has utterly destroyed his former appearance to some as an 'independent' or 'maverick' and his formerly somewhat broader based support has evaporated.

He is a real dumbass and that is becoming more clear every day

10. Yet this guy still beats Hillary and other Dems in many polls.
I hope neither he nor Dame Rudy are the Repub nominee. Newt or Mitt would be easier to beat.

15. Hillary generally unperforms Obama or Edwards in gen. elec. polls
take a look at all the polls on Rasmussen (who was the most accurate in 2006, by the way).

Anyway, that is a another subject. McCain can be beaten, but there is no reason for us to think 2008 is going to be easy. Especially if faux "heros" McCain or Rudy are nominated, or a weak general election candidate like Hillary is nominated.

17. It's tough when they could nominate Charles Manson and get at least 28% of the vote
But the odds are in our favor in Senate races.

18. Ware is a genuine hero of this quagmire.
At great personal danger he continues to tell Iraq like it is. Why the 28% or so refuse to listen to him can only be explained politically.

McCain is just plain ODIOUS; he is a liar, a fraud and a hypocrite. A good example was back when Kerry botched the joke, and the next day his "friend" McCain was on, near tears, lamenting that Kerry would insult the brave men and women, etc etc. He knew perfectly well that it was not intended, but went right along with his crocodile tears, anyway. That is despicable in my book; Kerry should NEVER forgive him for that!

19.  ‘Laughter Down The Line’ - Good summation of what the McCain candidacy has become.
The pandering, revisionism, and WH ass kissing to appeal the the BASE has left McCain a parody of himself. "straight talk express"?? Now that's funny.

20. McCain is pandering to the same bunch of drooling nitwits
who still believe that everything Bushco regurgitates their way is true. No need to
check anything out for themselves. They might have to admit they are wrong.
