Keith Ellison...attacked from the Left...
Edited on Wed Mar-28-07 02:53 PM by SaveElmer
Minnesota 5th...first Muslim Congressman...

In my opinion if Ellison continues to conduct himself like he did on this vote...he is going to be a very successful Congressman...took alot of guts to cast this vote...the correct one!

Hard votes cost politicians friends.

And, for the moment at least, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison has lost a lot of his closest allies because of the vote he cast Friday to end the war in Iraq. After days of anguish, Ellison voted to support a bill that would require all U.S. combat troops out of Iraq by Aug. 31, 2008.

That's not nearly soon enough for many who worked passionately to elect Ellison in November. They want the troops out now. And this afternoon, his office will be "occupied" with people who believe Ellison violated promises he had made to call for an immediate end to the war.

"We expected Keith Ellison to stand for better alternatives, like an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops and the withholding of all funds for this unjust and immoral war," the Anti-War Committee's Katrina Plotz said in a statement. "His vote to continue the war for 18 months with $123 billion in additional funding is not an anti-war vote."

1. This was a vote to continue the occupation for another year....

And beyond. It leaves the bushboy with many loopholes he can drive a humvee through.

Hillary has promised a continued role of the US military in Iraq beyond 2009, and she supports this bill of goods. .

5. We didn't have a plan going into Iraq, so we certainly need a
plan of getting OUT of Iraq. I am opposed to "Withdraw now" -- I am for PLANNING our withdraw coupled with massive diplomacy. You do know that the killing won't stop once our troops leave, right? What Democrats advocate is doing everything in our power to make this transition the least bad it can be. That is why we must inform the Iraqi government when we are leaving so they have ample time to plan for this.

13. They should have gotten the hint last November. not only that, most Iraqis
want us out now. This plan to leave in a few years (maybe!) is not acceptable.

Cut and Run. The only moral choice in a war of aggression.

2. Yep, he voted the right way.
I think it's good that we have people involved in MOVEMENTS that will try to push the envelope to end the war, but for Democrats, this thing needs to be taken step by step, especially given the regional situation. This will lay the groundwork for our next president, who will be able to end the war in part by using the Congressional blueprint.

3. He probably voted for the bill that had a more realistic chance of passing.
A bill that calls for immediate withdrawal and withholding funds is not going to pass the House.

8. Too many of the liberal left are inflexible and unrealistic.
To be a successful member of Congress you have to develop the art of compromise in order to get things done. The attitude of "I want it all my way or nothing" accomplishes nothing. The reality is that this Democratic Congress does not have a veto proof majority so to be inflexible and uncompromising means gridlock. Democrats are not responsible for Bush's choices, only their own. You take the best you can get and then try and move the bar from there. Leave the childish "I want everything my way" attitude to children, like Bush.

9. The Gentleman Voted Correctly, Sir
The persons quoted here assailing him are being extraordinarily foolish. Fortunately, their attacks will serve only to increase his stature in the community he represents so well.
