Bush Derides Iraq War Measure
He Says Democrats Will Be Blamed if Funds Are Held Up

In his most combative comments yet, President Bush mocked Democratic lawmakers yesterday for including a deadline for troop withdrawals and "pork" projects in an Iraq spending bill, declaring that "the American people will know who to hold responsible" if funding for the war stalls.

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shot back that Bush's vow to veto the spending bill carries its own cost. In a joint letter, they warned him against following "a political strategy that would needlessly delay funding for our troops."

"Calm down with the threats. There is a new Congress in town," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference. "We respect your constitutional role. We want you to respect ours."

As the two sides jabbed at each other, the Senate hurried to complete its $122 billion war spending measure, with a final vote on the package expected today. Republicans were unable to strike language setting a March 31, 2008, goal for the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraq, but GOP leaders decided not to block the legislation. Its approval is now considered a foregone conclusion.

Many Republicans are eager for Bush to veto the legislation, believing it could bolster him politically by reinforcing his role as commander in chief, while bringing about the Democrats' first public defeat on Iraq since they took control of Congress in January. Even GOP critics of Bush's Iraq record regard the Democratic withdrawal effort as overly meddlesome.

7. If Pelosi would react to a Bush veto

with getting H.R.1234 passed, Dennis Kucinich's bill that would withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq within 90 days, I would become a life-long supporter of her for President. I would also turn back flips and laugh myself comatose.

8. why is the minority party getting so much time on the floor?

the majority party should take more time and spread it evenly among Democrats to speak on the floor. Since the Republicans are in the minority..they should be given less time, and any Republican who exceeds that time should be ruthlessly cut off!

Republicans produced a riot on the House floor today, they were given equal time to debate an unbalanced, unfunded budget that does nothing to increase revenues to fight the war in Iraq. The Republican majority never gave such courtesy for Democrats to criticism them on the floor. They regularly cut off even blue dog Democrats in mid-sentence for offering balanced budgets and viable alternatives that Republicans could have voted for!

I'm impressed with Pelosi, but I want her to continue being the Speaker. We should demand order in the House, not permit disorderly conduct and anarchy among Republican members as votes are being held. We should not give Republicans free air time on the floor to attack the Democratic majority for being unpatriotic, even as Democrats provide real dollars for the troops.

If Republicans want air time, they can go to Rush Limbaugh..but our majority shouldn't be used against us! We should use our majority, our air time, and our arguments to build support among voters. Letting the Republicans have equal time in the House creates an echo chamber. first we hear Bush calling us unpatriotic and meddlers, then we hear it again from the minority party in the House. Once is enough for me, but will Democratic leaders wait until Republicans win back the House before this ends?
