James McGovern endores Hillary for president
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep. James McGovern (news, bio, voting record), a leading anti-war voice in the House, said Thursday said he's supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid despite her 2002 Iraq war vote.

"I feel strongly she would be a great president," the Massachusetts lawmaker said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I want a president who not only wants to end the war, but has the experience and ability to make it happen."

Clinton has faced criticism from many Democratic activists for her 2002 vote authorizing military action in Iraq.

She has refused to repudiate her vote, but has criticized the conduct of the war, saying "if we knew then what we know now" she never would have voted as she did.

"On the war in Iraq, I haven't agreed with every vote she's made, and I'm sure she doesn't agree with every vote I made," McGovern said. "But the bottom line is that I believe if she is elected president and this war is not over, then President Clinton will end this war. And that's the most important thing to me."

1. Obviously for some reason the politicians are starting to align with a
candidate. Even though I support Hillary in theory, (unless Gore gets into the race) I intend to stay out of the fray until y'all choose a candidate and I will work for all I am worth to be sure the democrat that all of you decide on becomes the president. The Pugs have not done anything worthy; Cheney/Bush (but also the representative Pugs in both Houses) have failed the country and more importantly the EARTH. They MUST be thrust from power in every possible venue/department/you name it asap.

4. She (like Obama and other Democrats) has said she would keep some troops there
but has repeatedly pledged to end the war and supports the withdrawal plan of the Democrats in Congress.

3. I like your attitude!
though I'm a Hillary supporter, I'm a Democrat above all else, and that's what's important.

5. Whoa...this is gonna make some "progressive" heads explode...
Watch out!

McGovern is a good guy. We attended the same college in the early 80's and I knew him slightly...

8. That made my head explode.
A few months ago, McGovern was the person some people wanted to oppose Kerry in a primary because Kerry was not tough enough on Iraq. He is sometimes to the left of Kucinich in foreign policy. He is the last person in the MA delegation that I would have seen endorsing Hillary, no offense to her.

9. McGovern is a staunch Democrat...
And a very good Congressman...sounds like he is looking beyond a recitation of policy positions (though that is all relative...they probably agree on 90% of the issues) to what kind of President he thinks she will be...

I say kudos to Jim
