Edwards vows to win West Virginia in 2008
Edwards vows to win West Virginia in 2008
Associated Press
Friday, March 30, 2007

-----
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards made a campaign stop Thursday in Charleston to raise funds and discuss labor issues with leaders. Edwards, 53, is a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and the 2004 running mate of presidential candidate John Kerry. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says he plans to win West Virginia, a state that President Bush won in the last two elections, in 2008.

"I've spent a lot of time in West Virginia over the years," Edwards said during a four-hour stop in Charleston on Thursday. "If I am the Democratic nominee for president, I fully intend to win West Virginia."
(...)
Edwards spoke Thursday with members of the United Mine Workers and the AFL-CIO at a Charleston hotel and then attended a fundraiser.

The former North Carolina senator praised the UMW for working to improve safety in coal mines, and lauded all unions' efforts to "strengthen the middle class (because) it strengthens America."

Edwards also said he planned to tell his wife, Elizabeth, that prayers were being offered in West Virginia for her. The couple announced last week that Elizabeth Edwards' cancer had returned and was incurable.

"Everybody's been so incredibly kind," he said.

Edwards said everyone deserves the same level of care as his wife, citing the high costs of her treatment.

"I am the only candidate with a universal health care plan," he said.

2. Edwards is focused on the issues of poverty and labor unions
he is also a southerner who can appeal to conservative voters. I think he could take West Virginia.

Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 08:22 AM by Craftsman
And the math is you almost have to win a few southern states to win.

3. Right into the teeth of the coal-devil
I would have all those mines shut down post haste. Let's see how John can handle the coal producers and the miners at the same time.

8. who do you plan to support?
I haven't made up my mind, but we have plenty of time to decide before the primaries. I would certainly support Edwards if nominated, would you?

5. There's every chance that he will!
We, afterall, have two Dem Senators, one Dem Governor and two out of our three representatives are Dems as well. I've heard the tone change here recently.

6. Dukakis won it, for some reason.
But didn't win many of the usual blue states.

VA (which is trendling blue) is much more realistic than WV imo.

9. Now, that's it! Which candidate can flip red states??
Otherwise we wind up again with the same dilemma, and the republics stealing electoral votes. Not again, it makes me sick to think about it.

11. Edwards gun control votes will be a serious handicap here. Richardson stands a better chance

When he and Kerry went back to Washington from the campaign trail in 04 to vote on that gun lawsuit legislation I knew they were gonna lose here. Several billboards sprouted on Rt 60 hilighting their votes.

16. WV was Al Gore's big loss
5 electoral votes would have won him the election. 2000 was the first time that state went to a gop for decades. It may have been 70 years or more.
