Schwarzenegger Appointee Kills 4 In DUI Crash

(AP) SACRAMENTO, Calif. A man arrested in a gruesome crash that killed four Monday is a Sacramento Republican activist and an appointee
of the governor.

Governor Schwarzenegger's office says Robert Vellanoweth will be removed from the state Optometry Board immediately. He was appointed to the post in November.

Sacramento police say the 63-year-old Vellanoweth was driving a Jeep that smashed into a car yesterday, killilng three adults and a toddler.

He's suspected on four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving. A fifth occupant of the vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Vellanoweth is a former activist with the Republican National Hispanic Assembly and was listed as vice chairman of Latinos for Arnold in Northern California during the 2003 recall.
