Anyone else nervous with Waxman's decision to go to Syria with Pelosi?

Given all of the investigations underway, why is Waxman part of this delegation? Seems like he ought to stay here and focus on the domestic crimes front. We have plenty of talented people who could be part of Pelosi's delegation, but few who can do what Waxman is doing.

Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I could see how a Waxman assassination could be a two-fer for this administration. Getting a key Democrat off their backs and using this to galvanize American public opinion against the Syrians.

if DOJ has been stacked with Bushies, what is there to stop it spreading everywhere? I frankly was shocked to hear that Waxman was going. Put nothing past the criminals, nothing.

4. I have to admit that this news gave me a real tin-foil moment

Do we know for sure Waxman and Pelosi initiated the trip overseas? Are we sure they 'wanted' to go to Syria? It just seems so wrong.

Why does the idea that they were forced to go to Syria actually make sense to me? Why does it seem so logical that a cover story was released to purposefully make it 'look' as though they insisted on going there in spite of warnings from the White House?

The really sad thing is that these tin-foil thoughts seem far more plausible to me than the "official" story.

Geez I am definitely feeling paranoid...

5. Odd that there was no pre-trip coverage.

I can't recall any mention of this trip before they were on the way. Seems like it was spur of the moment. I really don't know what purpose this trip could serve right now. There's little tangible action the Democrats can drive on ME policy right now. Certainly, Bush has no interest in having his turf encroached.

If Speaker Pelosi wants to travel abroad, why not visit one of our many democratic allies? Go to Germany, to France, to Britain, to Japan, heck, to Canada, go to a place where a free populace, free press and elected officials would welcome her with open arms as a sign that America might be getting back some sense again. Why go to visit a nasty little dictator? You just KNOW the righties are salivating for the images of Pelosi chit-chatting with Bashar in that reception room in Damascus with the too ornate and way-too-massive chairs and monumental coffee tables!

Bad visuals! Free and happy Frenchmen or Britons cheering Speaker Pelosi, wouldn't have to be that huge a crowd either, would be much better, in my opinion.

7. The Democrats are Syria's "friends". Because they want US to discuss

Iraq with Syria and Iran. Syrians too will not let anything happen to Pelosi or Waxman. Not friends so much as more friendly to the Syrians that the Repukes and the Neocons.

Maybe Waxman intends to use the long flight to discuss tables, and what's on or not on them. Maybe he'll talk about exactly what he's uncovered so far in his various investigations, reveal evidence that hasn't been made public yet, talk about where he thinks the inquiries are leading and how high up the food chain they'll go.

As a result of spending a good amount of time with an actual hero and a man who's truly interested in doing the peoples' business, and getting a little payback into the bargain, maybe Pelosi will decide to behave like the leader of an OPPOSITION party, instead of continuing in her current role as yet another compliant DLC android.
