The first woman to run on a US presidential ticket has promised her friend Hillary Clinton that she will help her fight Republican "dirty tricks" in the race for the White House.

"The only thing that can stop Hillary becoming the next president would be smears and dirty tricks," said Geraldine Ferraro, the Democrats' losing 1984 vice-presidential candidate. "I've told her I'll go anywhere and speak any time to make sure that doesn't happen."

4. Loved Ferraro!

I remember my mom taking me to a political rally in Seattle when Ferraro was running for VP. We got there early and were very close to the front of the podium. It was held outdoors in a park. I looked behind us up the street, and saw that there were people filling the streets as far as the eye could see. It was a sight I will never forget.

fairly quiet when Gore, Cleland and Kerry were smeared.

In fact - the Clintons were more vocally supportive of Bush on his military policies from 2001-2005, making it difficult for any Democrat running in 2002 and 2004 who was running in opposition to Bush.
