USC Students Sit-In To Protest Sweatshop University Clothing

By Doug Cunningham

University of Southern California students held a sit-in Tuesday to demand the university support the anti-sweatshop Designated Suppliers Program. The program screens factories to prevent sweatshops from making university logo clothing. Fifteen students at the University of Michigan were recently arrested during a similar sit-in at the university president's office there.

1. USC Students Sit-In to Raise Tuition
Because that is the operative effect of this boycott. Good for them, though.

7. Because the economy sucks in those places
When 'sweatshops' close, many of the children who worked there end up in prostitution or starvation.

4. Huh? That's like saying that labor rights harm workers, because global corporate
predators--when faced with demands for decent wages and the right to organize--outsource jobs and manufacturing to the cheapest, most unprotected labor markets abroad.

It blames the wrong people.

If tuition is raised because USC is prevented from profiteering on sweatshop labor, it's not the protesters who should be condemned. It's the USC regents! And if they punish the students, because fairness toward workers is required of them, then it will be time to protest and sit-in against the regents.

I don't understand your perspective. I'm not even sure what you're saying--it's so cryptic. But you sound like a scab to me. Don't strike. Don't picket. Don't protest. Shut up and take whatever management dishes out. Because they'll lock you out, beat you up, fire you and take the factory elsewhere--or raise your tuition--if you dare to challenge them. What kind of an attitude is that?

6. No I agree with you. The protesters should be applauded.
