SALEM, Ore. -- A Democratic activist announced Wednesday he
will run against U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith in 2008 and focus on the
Republican's changed stance on the Iraq war.
Steve Novick has gained attention for his battles against anti-
tax ballot measures and his efforts to force the Oregon Lottery
to provide less generous payouts to video poker retailers.
The 44-year-old consultant isn't well known outside of Portland,
though, and could face a tough task in raising enough money to
take on Smith, who has vowed to raise $10 million.
Novick noted at a news conference that Smith voted in favor of
the war in 2002 and supported President Bush's Iraq policy until
December, when he spoke out against it in an emotional speech
on the Senate floor. Smith has since voted with Democrats to
put a nonbinding end date on the war.
