Conservative Catholics are preparing to Swift Boat Giuliani
by John Aravosis (DC) · 6/01/2007 10:27:00 AM ET

From Tom Edsall at the Huff Post:
The early success of Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid has provoked a groundswell of opposition from disparate forces including conservative Catholics, remnants of Pat Buchanan's presidential campaigns and regional political operatives seeking to break into the Republican firmament....

The new organizations are relying on two fundraising models, both of which were highly successful in previous attacks. One is the drive in 2005 to force White House counsel Harriet Miers to withdraw her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. That campaign, spearheaded by conservatives opposed to Miers, raised an estimated $2 million. The other is the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign in 2004, which began with a modest budget but ended up raising millions in an effort to destroy John Kerry's reputation as a war hero....

Paul Nagy, the group's top-gun in New Hampshire, believes nominating Giuliani would be disastrous for the American conservative movement. Along with other activists, Nagy signed a letter seeking additional signatories to the anti-Rudy declaration. The letter states: "Rudy Giuliani is an unacceptable Republican nominee for President of the United States. He is pro-abortion, pro-partial birth abortion, pro-registration of handguns, and pro-homosexual rights. He is the most liberal Republican candidate for President in our nation's history."

It's sad that the fringe extremists running the Republican party have made "conservative" a virtue and "liberal" a vice. Why shouldn't a far-right Republican be viewed just as out of touch, out of the mainstream of GOP thought, as a far-left Republican? (And in fact, while a conservative Republican inhabits the fringe of American thought, the liberal Republican is near dead-center in the middle.) The far-right of the GOP fights back, they dominate the message, and that's why conservative Republicans are "good" while liberal Republicans are "bad." By contrast, the far-left of the GOP is typically made up of a bunch of wimps (e.g., Christine Todd Whitman, Olympia Snowe, and other paragons of mediocrity).

2. The best part of the 'pugs not having an anointed one this election is the
shamefilled wallowing in the bloodbath they're about to do.
I'm going to buy a truckload of popcorn today. It's going to be a looong election season...

3. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
It is about time these hypocrites got a dose of their own medicine. Like Bush crying that his immigration critics are using "codewords" like amnesty to blast his policy. He and Rove are masters at the language of propaganda (i.e death tax, homicide bombers, islamofacists (WTF?), democrat party, and on and on).

4. Let the Cons smear the slime on each other this time.

It's not pretty, but I won't shed any tears. It helps the side I'm on, and -- who knows? -- they may actually lose a bit of their enthusiasm for attack-dog politics when all is said and done. Though I tend to doubt it.

In any event, let them smear slime on each other. Meanwhile, we'll keep hitting them with the truth, which is pretty damaging to their case, itself.

There was NOTHING negative in Kerry's service record - nor anything neutral. He was a highly decorated hero. Not only that, the two instances where he got the major awards were incredibly impressive actions.

- He got the bronze star for risking his life to save a marine. One of the men who lied to say there was no gun fire - himself got the same award and it mentioned the same (per him non-existant) gun fire. The man saved - who was a Republican law enforcement person in Oregon - knew there was gun fire as did the person (not Kerry) who wrote the reports.

- The silver star was actually more interesting. From the time Kerry ended up at this base, he spoke to people involved in the dangerous ambushes they were running into. From accounts of both peers and crew, he got their views of how they happened. Then he played around (mentally) with ideas of how to respond rather than being sitting ducks.

Rood, a peer of Kerry's, now a Chicago Tribune editor, described how Kerry described the solution he came up with - surprising them by turning in their direction, allowing all their guns to fire towards them - using paper cups. He explained his idea to both some of his crew and his peers. He sold all of them on this solution and they agreed that they woud use it if faced with that kind of attack.

This was more interesting as it showed someone who was not level consious in seeking information or feedback. It also showed someone, who knowing they could very likely face the same dangerous situation that had killed others, analyzed the situation and tested responses and brought his peers on board - so, heaven forbid, if they were in that situation, they might survive. Every man on all three boats survived that attack.

Is this the type of officer you would prefer or would you prefer the SBVT guy who said that it shouldn't have gotten a medal because he planned the response in advance. I guess this make explain why they were for Bush who didn't plan for anything in Iraq.

Some of the Guilliani stuff is not negative, just not in line with the conservative Catholics positions.
