Ed Koch, who endorsed Bush in 2004, supports HRC in 08'
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 04:18 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Koch

==Since leaving office, he has frequently endorsed prominent Republican candidates, including Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg for Mayor, Al D'Amato for U.S. Senate, George Pataki for Governor, and, in 2004, George W. Bush for President of the United States. In 1980, as Mayor, he invited Ronald Reagan to Gracie Mansion shortly before that year's Presidential election, in which Reagan easily defeated Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter — a move widely seen as a tacit endorsement of Reagan on the part of Koch.

Koch has also endorsed Democrats, including Eliot Spitzer for governor in the 2006 election, and Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for President; for the general election, he has said that he expects "to support whichever Democrat wins the nomination."==

Koch also endorsed Holy Joe in 2006. What does this say about how progressive HRC is? Koch is the original Zel Miller faux Democrat...

Edit: It is true.

==Who should be the next president?
Hillary Clinton.==

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2006/11/ed_koch_is_still_dem_enough_to_1.html

==I supported Hillary Clinton when she ran for U.S. Senator from New York in 2000. On my office wall is a picture taken with Hillary on the night she won, on which she wrote, "Ed -- Thanks for standing up with -- and for -- me (and for watching my back too!) All the best. Hillary." I hope to be around and able to take a role in the campaign to elect her as President of the United States.==

There are a few other things you can Google about Koch and HRC. There seems to be no official endorsement, no press release, no photo op in NYC with Koch, though. Of course, this is to be expected. HRC would not want to parade Koch around anymore than she would want to parade Bruce Bartlett around.

1. Sounds like Koch is endorsing a fellow NY elected official in the primaries, and
it has little to do with how progressive or not anyone is.

5. Koch has strong beliefs. He wouldn't endorse someone solely because of geography
If this is true, what about HRC's politics appeals to the Koch, a man with quasi-conservative views who would fit better with Giuliani's GOP than the Democratic Party according to Rep. Rangel?

Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 04:01 PM by wyldwolf
Koch is the original Zel Miller faux Democrat...

Well, you fell all over yourself to point out how progressive Elliot Spitzer is:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3229912&mesg_id=3229912

So a Koch endorsement must not be any measurement of ones "progressiveness."

8. Spitzer was a shoo-in. Who else could he endorse?
HRC, though, is in a contested field. Koch had other options but the man who endorsed Bush in 2004, D'Amato, and Giuliani in the past, apparently decided to support HRC. It isn't surprising. HRC's views are closest to Koch's among leading national Democrats.

Ya know as opposed to a candidate who is barely the 1st choice of 15% of his own party.

Refer to my editing OP. There has been nothing in the papers because HRC does not want to publicize support from him, for obvious reasons.

Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 04:48 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
Koch was smart when he endorsed Spitzer. When he has had a choice recently, such as in 2004 between Bush and Kerry, and the eight person Democratic field (which would wind up adding 2 more candidates) for president, he has chosen the conservative option (Bush in 04' and HRC in 08').

...and Spitzer is this big "progressive," I would think conservative Koch would not endorse anyone if "progressive" Spitzer was his only choice.

25. Oh that;s good stuff. Even better, Spitzer has endorsed Hillary!
http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politicalticker/2007/05/spitzer-endorses-clinton-new-jersey.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer formally endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential bid Monday, calling the New York Democrat someone who has "proven herself time and again."

"We know there is one person who can bring us back, one person who has the vision, the courage, the guts to say what has to be said, to stand up to those interests who do not like to be stood up to," Spitzer said. "One person who back when it was not popular to talk about health care reform, she did it. When it was not popular to talk about failing education, she did it."

I bet there is bad blood between them. Maybe Rudy didn't treat Koch wiith the respect that he thought a former mayor deserved.

As far as I'm concerned, Koch is irrelevant.

and it all comes down to BCCI, 9-11 and the entire oil regional machinations of the last 4 decades - They all expected Kerry to open the books.

32. Koch endorsed Bush in 2004 because of Iraq and Israel
I remember seen him on Imus spouting his shit about going to war against Iran, Syria, and Lebanon's Hezbollah, the same shit one can hear from the likes of Likud's Bibi Netanyahu.

If Koch is endorsing Hillary, it is because people that hold the same views as he does, see Hillary as the one that can best promote Israel's best interests in the Middle East, even if it means more wars.
