Debate Winner - OBAMA!!
Clearly the winner. He demonstrated his leadership skills, stated a thoughtful clear vision for his policies and his beliefs for america. He clearly showed that he is a unifier who can brings people together. His response using our reestablishment as the moral authority in the world in order to reclaim our leadership in the world (and everyone on the panel rallied around that) shows the skill that america's needs, unlike Hillary who wanted to lump everything together by using "we are the same" analogy. She voted for the war and still dodges the question even tonight. Edwards said that he was wrong for this vote. Hillary, "Where The Beef"? Admit your mistakes but I guess it takes a real leader to do that.

Obama 2008!
:applause: :yourock:

Obama won with leadership, IDEAS, and honesty. Whether DUers and the American public agree, I can't say.

Hillary, Edwards, Dodd, and Biden also looked good. Richardson's line of 'universal education for all' and boycotting Olympics didn't make much sense.

We have a lot of good candidates, but only a few that are ELECTABLE. Hillary is not electable.

I agree with you on many points, I thought Obama won, but the majority of the others did very well. Clinton did a great job, Biden did a great job, Edwards got his points across, Gravel fulfilled a purpose, Richardson seems a bit weak on his ability to get his point across, but Kucinich fucking sucked, same line over and over again, absolutely no depth, he needs to go away.

57. do not agree
I am officially supporting Obama and think he won. A valid argument could be made that Clinton, Edwards, or Biden won. I think Edwards missed a potential to win points by jumping on Wolf like Hillary and Barrack did. I forget the exact question but it was another divisive question where he could have turned it back at him as a BS question and the root cause of the problem is GWB. The other missed opportunity was to say, "we have some minor differences, but we are all trying to provide a solution, unlike the Republican candidates that seem to try to out torture each other.

18. Obama displayed his strengths but, once again, where's the beef?
Edited on Sun Jun-03-07 09:34 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
He continues to offer platitude after platitude. Aside from health care, did he say what exactly he was going to do on anything?

On the plus side, he was consistently strong. In the last debate he was very inconsistent, sometimes very poor, other times very strong. It seems his inexperience showed last time. This time he did not stumble on any question and stuck to his (strong) talking points and his powerful (powerful in the it would focus group well sense), albeit, generic rhetoric.

==he is a unifier who can brings people together.==

That is the main theme of his campaign. We need to discuss this. First, is that feasible? Second, what are the costs of seeking to unify (what concessions will have to be made to the Republicans to achieve this?)? However, this is a feel-good thread for Obama supporters so I ask that discussion of these important questions regarding Obama be deferred to another day. I just wanted to point this out because people are assuming "unity" is easy to achieve and comes free of charge.

One other thing. I remember someone else who campaigned on "unity" in 2000...

I guess you must like the bull headed, arrogant stubbornness that we are in now. Our credibility and good standing in this world is a mess and you're calling uniting this country and the world a negative. Yes it is feasible because we as americans are losing blood and treasure daily along with $$ that are needed to heal this country. As for concessions, that's a reality, no one on that stage tonight along with the Republicans are going to deny that. Don't fool yourself. If you like sound bites and not much thought, that's OK. You call it platitude, I call it thought and progression. We need thinkers at the presidental level, not people who react without thought. Maybe what he stated was too deep for you to understand.

45. We got in this situation because people liked a candidate in 2000 who promised to "unite" us
Edited on Sun Jun-03-07 10:09 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
Excuse me for not blindly cheering when a politician calls for "unity" (a sure focus group winner!).

==you're calling uniting this country and the world a negative.==

No. Read what I said. It may be a positive, it may be a negative. Obama has not told us what concessions he plans to make to conservative Republicans to achieve his goal of unity. We can't intelligently assess the impact of this until he tells us what he intends to do.

==Yes it is feasible because we as americans are losing blood and treasure daily along with $$ that are needed to heal this country.==

When has this country ever been "united"? It has been divided ever since Lexington and Concord. Can Obama's rhetoric achieve what Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, JFK, et al. could not achieve? I doubt it. He needs to actually spell out how he plans to achieve this vaunted goal.

==As for concessions, that's a reality, no one on that stage tonight along with the Republicans are going to deny that.==

Of course. There is a difference in degree, though. Do you think, Kucinich, for instance, would make the same concessions Obama will make? Obama's main rationale for his candidacy is unity. That suggests, if he is being honest (which he seems to be) about this goal and that it is not just a political gimmick (like it was for Bush in 2000), he will have to bend over backwards to make concessions to achieve--and then maintain--"unity."

==You call it platitude, I call it thought and progression. We need thinkers at the presidential level, not people who react without thought.==

Uttering platitudes has nothing to do with thinking. One can think as much as Aristotle and still offer only platitudes. Platitudes are the result of thinking. No one questions Obama's intelligence. It seems, though, that he is playing it safe and being as generic as possible in the hope that he can maintain second place and then win the nomination after emerging as the "anti-HRC."

50. I see you are an Edwards fan
Answer this question: What does John Edwards have to offer that he did not have in 2004? Remember, he lost the democratic nomination and also lost the President election along with Kerry. I guess you are blaming Kerry for the loss. I know Edwards is blaming him and he is full of #%$^%!! He could not even carry his own state on 2004, plus he is in 3rd place, tried to turn up the volume tonight (desperation leave a very bad odor). You want to bash Obama about his policies but you're backing a loser. All Edwards did tonight was try to pick a fight in order to look good to the viewing public. A typical politician who has nothing to say but wants to cause confusion. I guess that $400.00 haircut needs some conditioner. Tonight,I don't remember Edwards saying anything constructive or worthy of thought. He just wanted to set a tone for the debate that favors him. It didn't work. Yes I think that Obama has a vision and will bring people together. As I said before, he is thoughtful. Not a guy like Edwards who uses sound bites to make a point, went to New Orleans to declare his candidacy in the 9th Ward, (that was bullshit) using Hurricane Katrina to get support. Has he been there since? No. TYPICAL D.C. POLITICIAN!! I applaud you for supporting him, that's you're guy but desperate people will do anything to get ahead. Just remember, he used his wife's illness as a political platform to garner support. TYPICAL D.C. POLITICIAN. I guess you are one too.

61. Uniter!
Mario, it is to degrees, Bush's definition of unity was keeping a 50.01% majority. To him and Karl that was unity. Do you really think Obama believe that. On the other side, do you really think any Dem candidate worth a fucking nickle would think he or she could keep more that 60 to 65% of the population happy. Right off the bat he has 30% of the population that will hate him, based upon what appears to be the Bush Repub baseline. So then he has to keep 5 to 10% of all Dems and Indies from being pissed, ain't going to happen.

Will he have to make some concessions, maybe but you pick and choose when and what you give up. But to suggest and tie him to the Bush message, and there is no what to put this, is FUCKING asinine.

By the way who do you support?

I think that his policies on the Iraq War, health care, immigration and others are sound and logical ideas that will be beneficial for a positive change for america. We heard all the candidates say what I will do when I become President, throwing sound bites just to answer questions and mixing their views with others to cause conflict and applause. That's good television and we as americans are so used to this type of spin that we don't think, we just react and we judge based on that. It's momentary but does it accomplish anything. Just look at the current administration. Daily we are told something totally different about the Iraq war and we buy it because we think that we have no choice. Just because Bush is in charge does not mean he knows what he is doing. That evident and we are all the current victims of that. Many politicians buy it too because it keeps them job secure, plus their agendas are far more important than you or me.

I see the next President as a person running a marathon with a 100 meter dash. That dash may take a professional runner 9 to 10 seconds, but along the way you have to make adjustments in order to win, it not just about running fast because everyone in the race is fast, it's the one with the best pre game, game (making adjustments along the way) and post game plan (preparation for the next event) that wins. The next President will have a helluva lot to do done before the finish line, and the pressure will be great, but within that race you have to THINK, carefully develop planning that's thought out, precise, economic and fiscally responsible, using teamwork and above all, a vision that puts and keeps ALL AMERICANS FIRST and foremost that will benefit us as well as our allies abroad. Joe Biden was right, "there will be little room for error" and Hillary Clinton was right, "it's going to take hard work".

I see Barack Obama as that person. Look at the past two Presidents, Bill Clinton, great job running the country but morally bankrupt(Monica Lewinsky and others). George Bush, inept, morally OK (he's a decent family man) but a horrible job running the country (This job is way over his head, constantly using lies and deception about everything). Two Presidents with character flaws on opposite sides.

I see Barack Obama as a change to all that. He's not perfect (no one is) and he does not have the "it' about me" complex. He has confidence and skill. A person with the character of a public servant willing to get his hands dirty, giving tireless effort to do the necessary hard work needed to correct these problems we face. It's not going to be easy, he will be tested (as we all are at times), it will cost (don't be fooled) and as usual, many may not like some of the things he may do. That's life and that's expected no matter who you are, but I see his love for america and the people in it. We americans are so used to the current aggression (the cowboy, my way or the highway attitude) to resolve issues but common sense and logic out weights that. The american citizen needs their country back. All the candidates have a plan but do they have the american citizen in mind. We need someone who put us first. We need that right now. He has that for all.

52. I have already emailed them.
They insult us as voters. We can tell the difference of who won the debate.

39. Obama's pronunciation of Pakistan
I am Pakistani-American, and I think Obama is the first politician to my recollection to actually pronounce Pakistan the correct way with the long a's.

I know it no way determines whether he should be president or anything, but as a Pakistani-American, it did bring a "wow" and smile to my face. Just wanted to share that.

48. I am still waiting for Obama to impress me.
He was the first candidate that I supported.
But he lost me along the way, and I keep waiting for him to win me back.

55. Substance.
I just don't see that coming from him.

I don't see a man that could stand up to Kim Jong Il.

He says all the right things, but he doesn't expand.

Maybe VP.

62. I doubt that Hillary is going to win.
She will have trouble gaining the support of people who don't already support her. As the process goes on people will likely shift their support to Obama and Edwards.

65. Actually, I still put Hil as most likely to win
The only hope Obama or Edwards has is that the other drops out early. As long as both stay in the race, they'll divide the vote and give Hil the win.

60. Obama struck me as the most presidential of the contenders.
While some may claim that he was vague, he gave enough information to convince me that being placed in the position he could do the job. People have to remember that the President it not intended to map out the logistics but rather make sure that the general path is appropriate. The President should rely on experts in the particular area in question to hash out the small details.

I must say that I was impressed with Kucinich’s response to the question on an assassination attempt. He was the only contender who was smart enough to realize that there might be future consequences for such an action. I don’t believe that Kucinich is electable because he lacks charisma and his stances are not close enough to mainstream American views. I also question the effectiveness of his economic policies.

64. Logistics and Strategy
Very good post lostinacause.

Why the hell should any one of the contenders put out detailed plans! PULL YOU HEAD OUT! THE REPUBS ARE BEHIND AND WANT THE DETAIL SO THEY CAN PICK AT IT IN THE GENERAL ELECTION. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU SHOW YOU GAME PLAN TO THE ENEMY. NAME ONE FUCKING DETAIL FROM THE REPUBS, INCLUDING BUSH, YET THE CIRCULAR FIRING SQUAD MEMBERS WANT THE DEMS TO PROVIDE DETAIL! COME ON THINK!

(and yes I meant to yell)

82. I agree.
I could probably be classified as an independent and so far of all the democratic candidates he is overall the most solid. He is a good speaker and given his responses in the debates, has strong reasoning skills.

67. As someone leaning toward Obama, I don't think that he won tonight
Obama isn't as comfortable on stage as some of the others and it definitely shows. He pauses and uses lots of "um" and "uh". Unfortunately you don't win debates on substance, you win debates on presentation and debating skills and Obama needs more practice in that realm.

83. Haha....Fox News thinks Obama came in LAST in debate
Republican Pollster Frank Luntz said that Obama came in LAST according to his polling of a focus a group.

Is it me, or does Fox News really fear Obama the most? Anyone who clearly saw the debate yesterday knows that Obama easily came in the top 3. Some think he came out on top.

84. Yes the Republicans in general fear Obama. There is a tendency to trash talk the person
who poses the greatest threat and clearly Obama does.

But definently not last...FOX will smear him either way. And every other Dem candidate for that matter.
