Dumbest statement of the night?
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 12:03 AM by Bucky
I like Bill Richardson. I think he can do the job but frankly htonight was not a great performance by him. His idea of sanctions against China for not helping out in Darfur being to boycott the next Olympics there struck me as odd. The verdict on Carter's 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympiad was "lame empty gesture."

I don't think Blitzer treated him fairly, by the way. But if that's the best leverage we can muster against China, this country is a lot more screwed than I thought.

1. I like the idea of boycotting the Beijing Olympics
It's one step of many.

3. Maybe, but it's the one suggestion he focused on. He even repeated it.
I don't know if you remember 1980, but the Olympic boycott that year accomplished nothing but giving a few extra metals to the Russians and East Germans. I doubt skipping the Chinese Olympicks would sway world opinion enough to sway the Chinese government.

5. I remember the 1980 boycott cheating hundreds of American athletes
out of the chance of a lifetime. And accomplishing nothing beyond that.

I've held an event with her personally; she's a very sweet woman who never stopped speaking truth to power.

30. Actually, in its entirety, the whole thing was funny.
I just read it and that's pretty much what is being said minus the flowery bullshit.

I don't think the poster is bigoted - I think he/she was trying to point out how pointless these debates are.

15. I agree, Richardson is dead on about China but neede dto propose some stronger leverage
Boycotting the Olympics alone isn't going to do anything. He should have proposed some better leverage over China.

Toss up.

Although I think Obama was pushing to make it a three way tie with his statement regarding VA hospitals vs. veteran's choice.

24. I dont think it has anything to do with medals
It has to do with the fact that if thats the best leverage we can put on china then we have major problems.
