Pelosi says while Democrats have failed to force Bush to a timetable he's backed into a corner
Pelosi sees ‘drastic’ troop cuts by mid-2008
Bush’s credibility on war in Iraq ‘in very bad shape,’ speaker says
MSNBC

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted Thursday that there would be “a drastic reduction in troops” in Iraq by the middle of 2008, saying Democratic opposition to the war had “changed the debate on Iraq in our country.”

In an interview airing Friday on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told host Chris Matthews that while Democrats may have failed for now to force President Bush to agree to a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops, their agitation for disengagement from Iraq had backed the president into a corner.

<<snip>>

“What you do is to have legislation that says that the funds for the troops will be used to redeploy them out of Iraq,” she said, adding that such a measure could take the form of a bill to repeal “the authority of the president to go to war in the first place.”

“There are several different resolutions to that effect,” Pelosi said. “We will, most certainly, be voting on one of them.”

Bush losing more support on Hill
Pelosi’s warning came as a new Associated Press poll showed that only 28 percent of Americans said they were satisfied with Bush’s handling of the war. With an eye on such numbers, senators put heavy pressure Thursday on Bush’s nominee to coordinate the war effort to speed up a resolution of some sort in Iraq.

3. He'll just veto such a bill.
Edited on Thu Jun-07-07 10:11 PM by drm604
He's not going to sign anything that repeals his authority and there won't be enough votes to override his veto.

Surely Pelosi knows this. Am I missing something?

Iraq Oil Outpust Lowest Since Invasion

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Apr. 28, 2006

(AP) With oil prices above $70 a barrel fouling the world economy, dismay is focusing on Iraq, whose exports have slipped to their lowest levels since the 2003 invasion.

--------

Iraq, a founding member of OPEC, sits atop the world's third-highest proven reserves. Its estimated 115 billion barrels is more than any other OPEC member except for Saudi Arabia and Iran.

But contrary to optimistic expectations, Iraq's oil production has slipped further and further since the U.S.-led invasion, to an average of 2 million barrels a day. It has never regained even the reduced production levels that prevailed in the 1990s, when Iraq was under tough U.N. sanctions.

--------

In 1990, probably its peak production year, Iraq extracted about 3.5 million barrels a day. Restoring production to that level would require years and a $30 billion investment, Orwel said, even in the "best case scenario."

--------

Not much has changed since then of course...

Just 26 million Iraqis to go...

14. Bush and Cheney DESERVE to be impeached.
Olbermann did a hard-hitting segment on this that left me seething. The Democrats would be shirking their duties if they DON'T impeach. But the war is another pressing issue that IMO takes precedence. The Democrats damn well better be doing whatever it takes to bring the war to an end. I have probably more patience than the majority of folks around here, and the Democrats are approaching getting on my last nerve with this excruciating process.

20. Agreed...
I would LOVE to see them impeached, they sure earned it. But you are right about the war and the Dems doing whatever it takes. I had hope, still do, I guess, but when they sold out on the funding bill, much of that hope went straight down the toilet.

23. my patience ends in September
I will be fresh out of patience by then. My theory is that perhaps the Dems are holding the 36K earmarks as carrots for the GOP. The fact that the surge report card allegedly comes in September and the earmarks will be announced in September could very well be a coincidence, but I suspect it may have something to do with another attempt to shut down the war then.

We will know then I suppose; it's just a crime that people will continue to die until then.

It is very disappointing that the Democrats haven't played hardball right out of the box and, for the record, the entire cache of my patience will be spent by September. If they don't muster the stones to end the war then, they better start impeachment. Because if they don't do either they aren't worth spit and our system is officially, irretrievably broken.

17. Of course there will be large troop reductions right before the elections
That is the reason for the "surge". They build troop levels up to two hundred thousand so they can pull out seventy five thousand about 40% and tell America there have been major troop reductions which proves Bush* won the war, but in actuality the numbers return to about the same as before the "surge" and Democrats will get sucker punched by it even though it is being telegraphed months in advance..
