Clinton wins endorsement of Rep. Meek (FL)

Clinton wins endorsement of Rep. Meek
One of Florida's top Democrats, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, has told Hillary Clinton's campaign that he will support her for the party's presidential nomination.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has secured the support of a major political player in South Florida: U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, who boasts the image of an up-and-comer along with a surname that is an institution in Miami's black community.

The news is a setback for rival presidential candidate Barack Obama, her black colleague in the U.S. Senate.

9. ****Meek: I have not endorsed Hillary Clinton****

One day after he was poised to endorse Hillary Clinton for president, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek told her campaign that it was ''not authorized'' to use his name.

Sources close to the campaigns of Clinton and rival Barack Obama told The Miami Herald on Thursday that Meek was throwing his support to Clinton. Meek had told some Obama supporters he was backing Clinton, and he was discussing how to make the announcement with her campaign, the sources said.

Asked about Meek's support Thursday, the Clinton campaign sent out a press release announcing that Florida U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings and Debbie Wasserman Schultz were going to serve as national co-chairs, and that another ''major Florida endorsement'' would be released in a conference call that afternoon.

The call was canceled at the last minute, the Clinton campaign said, because of a ''scheduling conflict,'' and no further announcement was made.

12. Well, the Clinton campaign never officially announced that the had endorsed
the original article says that sources from both the Clinton and Obama camps confirmed that he would be endorsing Hillary. The whole story is very bizarre because it seems that he told people in both camps that he would be endorsing her - but now he says he hasn't.

Perhaps he's changed his mind, is still undecided, or isn't ready to endorse her yet - and he told he Herald that they didn't need to correct their original story. I dunno what's going on .

Miami Herald Correction
Sat, Jun. 09, 2007

The headline on a story on page 5B of Friday's Miami-Dade edition of The Miami Herald incorrectly said U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek had endorsed the presidential candidacy of Democrat Hillary Clinton. Meek has not officially endorsed Clinton's candidacy. The error was made in the copy-editing process.
