That really is the point. That and getting Bush's AWOL story off the front burner. And seeing just how Kerry will respond to dirty tricks.

I also suspect another motive is to weaken Kerry and undermine his candidacy. Now, I'm not a fan of this particular JFK, but if this story drags on (and whether or not it's true is absolutely irrelevant here) he'll either go on to win the nomination but his ability to campaign effectively on the issues will be seriously compromised, or his candidacy will be destroyed, and neither Edwards nor Dean will be seen as strong, effective guys who were really chosen to be the nominee, but rather fell into once Kerry was eliminated.

I think this is simply a sneak preview of what's in store between now and November.
