Bush & Congress hit new lows in polls

WASHINGTON - As President Bush attempts to revive the controversial immigration reform bill he supports, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that Republicans are abandoning the president, which has dropped his job-approval rating below 30 percent -- his lowest mark ever in the survey.

But he isn’t the only one whose support is on the decline in the poll. Congress’ approval rating has plummeted eight points, bringing it below even Bush’s. And just one in five believe the country is on the right track, which is the lowest number on this question in nearly 15 years.

In the poll, Bush’s approval rating is at just 29 percent (my emphasis). It’s a drop of six points since April, and it represents his lowest mark ever on this question in the NBC/Journal poll.

Also in the poll, only 23 percent approve of the job that Congress is doing (my emphasis), a decline of eight points since April. That number is within striking distance of the 16-percent rating Congress held in October 2006, just before Republicans lost control of both the Senate and House in last year’s midterms.

More disgusted still with the Republicans, but nevertheless turned off by all of it.

5. 45% Have Favorable Opinion of Democrats, 37% Say Same of GOP

Forty-five percent (45%) of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say the same about the Republican Party.

Both parties are viewed unfavorably by a majority of Americans—51% have an unfavorable view of the Democratic Party and 57% have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican Party.

These figures include 21% who have a Very Favorable opinion of the Democrats and 30% with a Very Unfavorable opinion. Seventeen percent (17%) have a Very Favorable opinion of the GOP. Thirty-five percent (35%) have a Very Unfavorable opinion.

Separate research has shown than the number of people identifying themselves as Republicans has fallen to new lows. The number of Democrats has fallen since the beginning of the year as well. Democrats are favored over Republican on all ten key issues tracked by Rasmussen Reports. But, the GOP has gained significant ground on the immigration issue over the past month. This is especially interesting since the President’s Job Approval has fallen to new lows as the immigration debate unfolded.
