POLL: Obama narrows the gap and closes in on Hillary (36% / 32%), Gore and Edwards far behind
Barack Obama Narrows the Gap and Closes in on Hillary Clinton

Al Gore and John Edwards Still a Long Way Behind Them

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While 13 points
separated Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama just one month
ago in the race for the Democratic nomination for President, the gap
between them has narrowed considerably to just four points. Just over
one-third (36%) of adults who would vote in a Democratic primary or caucus
would vote for Senator Clinton, while 32 percent would vote for Senator
Obama. Last month, 40 percent would vote for Senator Clinton and 27 percent
said they would vote for Senator Obama.

Of the next closest potential candidates, only one is an actual
candidate. However, both are very far behind the two front-runners. Al Gore
is next in preference as 14 percent would vote for him, followed by 12
percent who would vote for John Edwards. The other six candidates and
potential candidates are all even further behind with only Governor Bill
Richardson above one percent - - he is at three percent. The Democratic
primary race is clearly a two person race at this point in time.

These are some of the results of a Harris Poll of 3,304 U.S. adults
surveyed online by Harris Interactive(R) between June 1 and 12, 2007. This
survey included 1,196 adults who expect to vote in a Democratic primary or
caucus and like all polls conducted well before an election, it should not
be read as a prediction. Rather, it is a snap shot of the presidential
"horse race," at a very early stage in the race. A previous column(1)
reviewed the data on the Republican candidates.

Before being asked to pick their first choice in the primary elections,
the adults surveyed were also shown a list of all the main candidates in
both parties and some other well-known Republicans and Democrats, and asked
which of them they would consider voting for. They could name as many
people, in both parties, as they wished.

Among Democrats, more people say they would consider voting for Hillary
Clinton (70%) than for Barack Obama (57%). However, Obama edges Clinton
among Independents (by 38% to 33%). Among the next tier of candidates, half
of Democrats (49%) would consider Al Gore, while 43 percent of Democrats
would consider John Edwards.

1. GORE - OBAMA !!
That would be the strongest ticket we could run with in 2008.

Or if Gore refuses to jump in - we should go with CLARK - OBAMA.

Obama has a lot of potential. But he is young enough to wait for 2016.

It's difficult to know what would be the impact of Gore and/or Clark jumping in.

My hunch is that Gore announcing would double his support overnight.

Wes Clark announcing would send his support into double digits.

But there are still another 7 months to go before the Iowa caucuses.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

5. I hope Hillary stays first in the national polls.
It will make her 3rd place finish in Iowa that much more devastating to her campaign.

9. Gore is trending up, and Hillary is trending down...

Obama is also trending up, but that makes it more likely that neither will have the firm majority that would have one run away with it. I think this makes it more and more likely that Gore will jump in, even if he waited until a "brokered convention" (if no candidate got a majority of delegates that were needed to run away with the nomination, which is starting to look more and more likely, though its still WAY too early to tell yet.

This poll is still rather meaningless of saying something is in anyway decided, despite the editorial comments that try to indicate otherwise.

Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 03:39 PM by jefferson_dem
Seriously, i think the race stands at between 10-14 points edge for Hillary. Most importantly, the "aura of inevitability" the Hillary camp was hoping would set in at this point hasn't. Sorry. Obama is well within striking distance.

31. "aura of inevitability"
Well said!

Hillary and Co. thought they would have this sewn up now. Instead, the ultra candidate barely clings to her lead in the polls.

Most folks I converse with on a day to day basis want nothing to do with Hillary.

17. What makes me angry is this Harris poll fudging the numbers..
Obama is behind anywhere from 20 to 24 pts behind Hillary.
Believe it or not, I take umbrage with this poll because it's taking advantage of Obama supporters good nature and heart.

Sorry folks, just had to say it out loud.. Hillary is way ahead and I hate seeing you guys being mislead with false hope! That is beyond the pale..!

30. It's clearly a two person race. Obama or Clinton will most certainly be our nominee
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 07:49 PM by calteacherguy
unless an undeclared candidate declares and gives them a run for their money.

Obama suffers from inexperience, and Clinton suffers from unacceptably high disapproval rating for a General Election candidate. Both these factors make Obama or Clinton less than ideal General Election candidates.
