Dean's value lies online
Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 05:11 AM by tobius

By David Postman
Seattle Times chief political reporter

Union backers of Howard Dean who will soon withdraw their endorsement if his fortunes don't reverse say they want Dean to remain involved in the presidential campaign and not fade into the background. If Dean isn't the nominee, they still want his issues, his organization and his Internet donor network.

The idea would be to keep Dean supporters interested — and donating — through the November election.

Trippi, the man behind much of Dean's Internet success, said at a California technology conference this week that Dean should protect his e-mail list and not turn it over to the Democratic Party or the eventual nominee.

"I'm not sure I would turn it over to the nominee, because I don't believe the nominee has a relationship with these people," Trippi said, according to The Associated Press.

"The one thing about the Internet is having that relationship. I think the relationship is between Howard Dean and that individual."

Just how tight that relationship is, however, is in question, particularly since Dean hasn't been able to translate his network into wins in a primary or caucus.

ouch

1. I hope that Dean doesn't share his donor base
If I was part of his donor base and he shared my name with other people I would be extremely angry.

5. So the rats don't want to leave the ship so much as take it with them.
Well, isn't that special.

Really, the unions should be very quiet just now. Because their endorsement has been shown to be worthless.

10. why should a candidate
who didn't do the work, and doesn't speak to the same issues be given these lists?

6. Trippi seems to have given up on Deans chances
"I'm not sure I would turn it over to the nominee, because I don't believe the nominee has a relationship with these people," Trippi said, according to The Associated Press.

7. Internet Donor Network
It's a pretty safe bet that "if Dean is not the nominee" (also part of the quote above), referring to the force that sometimes calls itself "People Powered" as "Internet Donor Network" pretty much sums up *no relationship with these people*.

You might want to read Trippi's blog if you sense he has given up on Dean's chances.

11. So in reality, dean should just take his ball and go home?
Nice thoughts but unless I miss my guess, a lot of dean supporters will get behind the nominee with full support once chosen.

The point of withholding his donor list is meaningless since contributions will be forthcoming from ex-supporters that decide getting bush out is more important than just who does it, those that won't support willingly, wouldn't support if contacted from the list anyways.

dean said he would support the nominee, withholding vital information that could help beat bush would not look as if he was honest in his statement, and would only help divide the party even more.

12. Dean supporters are not unthinking androids.

In fact, Dean supporters may be about the most non-conformist voting block of all and therefore different, non-coersive, tactics must be used to gain our support and the funding and legwork that comes along with that support.

13. I'll be quite annoyed
my name isn't on the other canidate's lists for good reason. If I want to support one of them, I'm perfectly capable of finding them and telling them so. This would be like selling my name to telemarketers.

14. Does Dean have the right to transfer the information over to Kerry
or whoever is the nominee? I plan to contact the Dean Campaign and tell them they are not authorized to transfer any of my information to anyone.

16. It's not Dean's ball
It's ours. I wouldn't object if Dean sent out an appeal to his supporters to support the nominee. This gives the choice to the individual supporter, as it should be. I would object to him just handing the list over. Giving the list is not the only way that Dean can help the nominee.

15. in other words:
if people who donated to dean want to donate to another candidate, they can probably figure out how to do it without being solicited through dean's email list. if they wanted to be on a DNC mailing list they would be, or already are.
