could fill us in on the process? I'm told they are always looking for people to fill slots and that the nation Chamber of Commerce are always pushing local chapters to be active on these boards. The post office or your congress rep may have more info.

1. I don't remember all the details, but...
yes, there are local draft boards even though there is no draft in effect at present.

The law authorizing a draft also requires that there be draft boards more or less permanently in place in the event a draft happens. People come and go on these boards, but the law requires them to be restaffed with new people every 10 years. Last year there was a huge ruckus when the call went out for new members and a lot of people thought that was because a draft was imminent. Not so-- it was the normal changeover.

FWIW, a number of Quakers, Mennonites, and other peace activists have signed up to be on draft boards to make sure conscientious objector appeals go through properly.

2. A friend told me about thia a few years ago.
I remember I googled it and found an online application. IIRC I was not eligible, but I can't remember why.

4. I just became a member of the local draft board
I applied at the selective service website approximately two years ago. and just when I had forgotten about it, I was contacted by e-mail and asked if I was still interested. He told me tht Oakland county had two openings and would I like to interview for the position at a local community center. At the interview I learned that there were only two applicants so I figured it was a pretty sure bet. I recieved my appointment in May (comes with a neat certificate frm the pretzeldent and everything) and I'm scheduled for training on the 14th of July. What else would you like to know?

5. Just curious about the length of your appointment and does it
take up a lot of your time. Let us know how the training goes.

6. As far as I know, it's until I resign

But if I want to go on to become a leader and move up the chain, I have to serve locally a minimum of three years.

so far, it's taken up almost none of my time. Trainining is only one day and it's within 20 miles of my home. I would expect that as long as a draft is not reinstated, there'll be minimal time spent on training.
