WaPo's Sally Quinn's bright idea: Replace Dick Cheney with Fred Thompson. "Everybody loves Fred."
A GOP Plan To Oust Cheney
By Sally Quinn
Tuesday, June 26, 2007; 12:00 AM

The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week's blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.

<>For such a plan to work, however, they would need a ready replacement. Until recently, there hasn't been an acceptable alternative to Cheney -- nor has there been a persuasive argument to convince President Bush to make a change. Now there is.

The idea is to install a vice president who could beat the Democratic nominee in 2008. It's unlikely that any of the top three Republican candidates -- former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Sen. John McCain of Arizona or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- would want the job, for fear that association with Bush's war would be the kiss of death.

Nor would any of them be that attractive to the president. Giuliani is too New York, too liberal. His reputation as a leader, forged on 9/11 and the days after, carries him only so far. McCain, who has always had a rocky relationship with the president, lost much of his support from moderate Democrats and independents (and from a fair amount of Republicans) when the Straight Talk Express started veering off course. And no matter what anyone says about how Romney's religion doesn't matter, being a Mormon is simply not acceptable to Bush's base. Several right-wing evangelicals have told me they don't see Mormons as "true Christians."

That leaves Fred Thompson. Everybody loves Fred. He has the healing qualities of Gerald Ford and the movie-star appeal of Ronald Reagan. He is relatively moderate on social issues. He has a reputation as a peacemaker and a compromiser. And he has a good sense of humor.

4. What makes the Republicans think that they can "get rid" of cheney?
The Congress can't even get rid of Torture-Boy. "Republicans" "getting rid" of someone in the Dictator's government? HIS government? Yeah, right. I know! Let's pretend that there is a bridge in the woods that connects our world to a world where the Constitution is still enforced and the people are still free. Let's pretend that we are a wealthy country where every kid has an opportunity to be whatever she wants to be. Let's pretend that we live in a country where the sick are cared for, not because they can afford it or because they have insurance, but because they are sick; where the elderly are respected and cared for, not because they can afford it, but because they are respected and cared for. Let's pretend that we live in a world where we respect work and honesty and community and the common good. Let's pretend that we live in a world where we don't kill people for money and power...or just because we can.

I mean if the Republicans are going to pretend that they can get rid of Cheney, we might as well pretend something, as well...

6. Sally Quinn, where did you go?

She used to write entertaining and feisty feature articles for the Post in the early 1970's, before she became a Washington "doyenne" whatever the hell that is. This article is such a crock of shit - Sally surfaces every five years or so with another piece of crap or novel...I actually admired her work in the old days & it is so strange how downhill she has gone...

8. I love how she believes that Rudy McRomney wouldn't want the job--
(yeah, like they wouldn't jump at the chance)--and it's a good thing, because they're not qualified--too Mormon, liberal, etc. But Fred's the only one who would want the job! AND he's qualified, because of his sense of humor and healing qualities! He's a peacemaker! EVERYBODY LOVES HIM! And he's going to help GWB end Iraq, and heal the environment, and cure AIDS.

10. I've thought this for some time
The Cheney crew is bending over backwards just daring someone to impeach him. There is plenty of ammunition, and the votes are there.

They want to open the slot, appoint whomever they deign the next president, give them a bit of experience, then have a more viable candidate than the pitiful group there now. Seriously, this is stacking up like Bob Dole in 1996 for them.

I think the Democrats may just be aware of this. I'm not so sure it'll be Thompson either. No telling who they've got up their sleeve, as I'm not so sure Jeb and Condi are out of contention. Someone like Condi may be the only one who can fight the Hillary/Obama ticket that is looming in front of them. Anyway, if I were them, I'd just keep dragging the disgusting rotting meat out of the closet, and hang it in front of the American people so we can smell the vile putrification of this evil group in power. Maybe they'll even be a little wary of someone who pretends to be religious the next time.

12. One of Tweety's good friends...
It's no wonder we get the kind of punditry we do, when Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee and Tweety and Timmy hang out at Sally's home for cocktails and assure each other how smart they are and how much their opinions matter.

And then Sally proves it. Yes, Tweety thinks Fred is Aqua Velva, but Sally goes beyond the smell: she knows the "healing qualities" of the Aqua Velva man. And he can tell good jokes about trashy blonds, too.

Kudos to our group of pampered princes and princesses! They have earned their keep for this month.

14. That is one scary thought
and I wouldn't put it past any of them to pull some shit like this.

I don't think Bushco would choose Thompson, though. Rice would be the more logical choice for them.

:scared:

15. Jeb Bush's son has already signed on with Fred Thompson, as well as Mary Matalin and Liz Cheney.
That's George P. Bush.

16. That's the handwriting clue - They must think Romney won't survive and
are tapping Thompson. Either way, Bushes get the protection of their secrecy and privilege that they require from the next president.
