12. I, too believe she will be our next First Lady, because . . . .
Bill isn't going to be First Lady, he's going to be First Gentleman (or "First Laddie" as he likes to say). After that, Michelle Obama will be First Lady, so it all works out . . .

9. I think you're confused. Her Iraq plan has remained unchanged since she started running.
Hillary still wants us out, but her plan has always including seeing what was happening when she leaves office - that's something she's been saying since the beginning of the campaign, not a new development.

11. Sounds like she is leaving wiggle room to continue the war?
This is from July.
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/speech/view/?id=2366

As a result of these failures, the next President will inherit some of the greatest foreign policy challenges in our history. Rising terrorism and extremism. Frayed alliances. And the increasingly difficult task of restoring American leadership in a world that has come to view our nation with suspicion and mistrust.

We cannot effectively address any of these challenges if we continue our military engagement in Iraq. As long as we stay there, our military strength will continue to erode. Our standing in the world will continue to decline. Our enemies in the region will continue to exploit our failures. Our occupation will continue to serve as a recruitment tool for terrorists. Our support for Afghan democracy, our conflict with the Taliban, and our hunt for al Qaeda will continue to be compromised. And our brave men and women will continue to lose their lives and suffer grievous wounds.

Now on Sunday she sounded more like bush, wanting to wait and see how things are. Isnt that the same strategy that Bush is using and everyone hates. Didnt everyone show in 2006 that we wanted out of Iraq? We still are there and if she as president feels this way, we could be there a long time.

This is from Sunday.

Asked by ABC's George Stephanopoulos whether she would withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq during a first term as president, Clinton (D-N.Y.) gave a simple answer: She did not know.

But she used more than 225 words to say so. "You know, I'm not going to get into hypotheticals and make pledges, because I don't know what I'm going to inherit, George. I don't know and neither do any of us know what will be the situation in the region. How much more aggressive will Iran have become?" Clinton said. "What will be happening in the Middle East? How much more of an influence will the chaos in Iraq have in terms of what's going on in the greater region? Will we have pushed al-Qaeda in Iraq out of their strongholds with our new partnership with some of the tribal sheiks or will they have regrouped and retrenched?"

13. All I can tell you is, her position hasn't changed
she's never said that she would bring home all the troops immediately. If you thought that was her plan, you misunderstood.

Here's what she had to say in April:
HRC: Well my goal is to end the war when I'm President and to bring our troops home, but as has been stated in the provisions passed by both the Democratic and the Democratic Senate, we do envision a vastly reduced residual force to remain for some limited period of time to train Iraqi troops, assuming they get their act together and begin to defend themselves, to provide logistical support for counter-terrorism missions, to protect the Kurds if necessary because they have certainly fulfilled their end of the bargain as they have tried to proceed to establish an autonomous region in the north.

And that does not mean we would have a permanent force. I am absolutely clear, we do not plan a permanent occupation or permanent bases, but in line with all of the legislation that has been passed by the Democratic majority or passed when we were in the minority going all the way back to 2005, we have tried to be responsible in saying there may be some continuing missions to protect America's vital interests, and to support an Iraqi government that we hope to be an ally going forward, assuming they are acting responsibly.

So, the bottom line for me is that we will begin redeploying our troops as soon as I am President, and we will do so in as expeditious a manner as possible. We will survey the situation to determine whether there are any remaining vital security interests by 2009, and if there are among the ones I've mentioned and among the ones that appear in the legislation passed in both the House and the Senate, we will proceed to do so in as thoughtful and responsible a manner as possible with as few troops as necessary with no permanent occupation and no permanent bases.

I hope that helps!

18. That is absolutely not true.
She said repeatedly as recently as Sunday that she won't vote for any more appropriations for Iraq without a timeline for withdrawal. But she doesn't control all the votes in the Senate. So realistically, she doesn't know what is going to happen in the next 18 months, nor what the situation will be when she takes office.

without a timetable for withdrawal. She voted against the last appropriations request for Iraq and she says she will continue to do so.

You're distorting her position on the war.

48. It looks like she said she will have to see what is happening when...
she becomes president. I liked it when she looked at this way:

We cannot effectively address any of these challenges if we continue our military engagement in Iraq. As long as we stay there, our military strength will continue to erode. Our standing in the world will continue to decline. Our enemies in the region will continue to exploit our failures. Our occupation will continue to serve as a recruitment tool for terrorists. Our support for Afghan democracy, our conflict with the Taliban, and our hunt for al Qaeda will continue to be compromised. And our brave men and women will continue to lose their lives and suffer grievous wounds.

In July she sounded like we had to get out or else we wouldn't be able to address the challenges and things would only get worse. Now she wants to wait and see whats happening and what role Iran would be taking? I don't see this as me using propaganda.

At one point she sounds like we have to get out and at another she sounds like she has to wait and see how bad it is? What does she have to wait for? She has already stated that we need to get out.

8. He Does Like to Hug The Ladies
I think its time to turn the page on the Clinton-Bush era of divisiveness. We need someone who will be able to unite the country on liberal programs like universal health care and environmental protection. Not someone who will give the GOP a convenient reason to raise cash by opposing the next President's every move.

Sadly, I wish the problems with the Clintons went no farther than Bill's well-known indiscretions. It is Hillary's need to look "tough" with the military and her desire to further extend the powers of the executive branch that truly worry me.

14. I remember when I first became aware -
that there was something really really special about Bill. Early in his first presidential run he was speaking at a large church. After he finished speaking he started off the stage to shake hands (with adults) on the rope line when all of a sudden there was complete bedlam as the kids started swarming in his direction. They were climbing over the pews and over the railings to get to him. They were calling his name and shouting at him for attention. I had never seen kids acting like that toward a politician.

And even more shocking was that when they got to Bill they didn't want to shake his hand - they wanted a hug. And when they got their hugs they didn't want to let go.

That day I called a friend and told him Bill Clinton was going to beat George Bush - there is no way to stop him. I watched with fascination over the next months as time after time the kids wanted a hug - and they always got one.

Bill is unfaithful, sexually, with his wife.

This is a known fact. I don't excuse it, but it's a fact. I'm just facing that fact.

It's up to Hillary to do what she wants about it...

I really don't expect him to have affairs with the wives of heads of state, etc.

He's too intelligent to do anything like that.

Just my two cents...

It's disheartening to hear so many DUers repeating Republican disinformation as fact.

Oddly, the people who are doing the Republicans' dirty work for them always sound inordinately proud of themselves.

This state of affairs represents a signal triumph of the right-wing slime machine.

In case you didn't know, there was an unprecedented multi-million dollar campaign, led by ditzy billionaires like Richard Scaife--to smear Bill Clinton. Judging from this thread, it was extremely successful.

The Republicans knew Clinton would be a popular and effective President, so they had to relentlessly attack him. Pretty much nothing you heard about the man is true. This had the intended effect of lowering the morale of Democrats.

Stop hurting yourself and your party by swallowing--and then proudly repeating--right-wing lies about the last elected American Prtesident. The wingers are playing you like a flute. Please read "The Hunting of the President" to find out where your ideas came from.

much less everyone else, including you and me, have never sinned in their lives, it's hard for me to go along with the sanctimony. And since there isn't a person on earth who would not come out looking like crap if they're the target of a multi-million dollar effort to not only dig up dirt on them, but then churn it out over and over and then shove it down everyone's throats for years, I'm not going to pile on with the "Bill Clinton did something wrong" brigade. Unfortunately, it sounds that you have, and given the puerile jab you threw into your post, you've even memorized some passages from the right wing phrasebook.

Yes, he did something wrong. He pissed off a lot of people, including me. He paid dearly for it. His wife forgave him.

I'm over it.

Some powerful words from Bill ...

Our nation will not be undone by terror. We will defeat it, but we must take care that in so doing we do not compromise the character of our county or the future of our children.

My Life by Bill Clinton, page 956.

Under Bush the character of our country has been compromised, our children will pay for it.

My hopes are that the Clintons, together, can undo some of the tremendous damage the corrupt Bush family has done.

Welcome back, Bill. You've been dearly missed.
