"Gore in Democratic race actually helps Clinton"

An InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll conducted hours after the announcement of former Vice President Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Prize indicates that Sen. Hillary Clinton actually benefits from having Gore in the presidential mix.

In the nationwide poll conducted Friday evening, Clinton had the support of 43 percent of likely Democratic primary or caucus voters – a 12 point jump from a similar national poll conducted by the organization Oct. 4-7.

When included in the presidential field, Gore was in second place with 15 percent. But his numbers come from a drop in support for the other Democratic candidates and a dramatic decrease in undecided voters from 25 percent to 5 percent.

“These results really didn’t shock me, given that when we polled with Gore in the pack nationally or in various states months ago, he had the same impact of hurting the other male candidates a bit, but not taking much, if anything, away from Clinton,” said InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery. “That said, I was slightly surprised that the Nobel news did not give him much of a boost, even among those 65 and older, who tend to watch cable and network news on a daily basis.”

1. The thing about Gore is, many people may not understand

why we need him yet. Gore, like Pompey the Great, just needs to stomp his feet on the ground to raise thousands (millions) of volunteers and dollars. I know I'll go door to door for him.

Gore is such a threat that "they" will say just about anything to attempt to pull people away from his camp. Not going to happen. You can fool some of the people... but we won't be fooled again!

4. Screw those polls...Gore's entry would totally change the dynamic

I think we would see a groundswell of excitement and support that would end with a huge landslide victory for President Gore.

5. People often answer survey questions strategically rather than indicating who

they really want. His polling at 15% is damned good given that he has not announced his candidacy, it will shift if he does announce.

6. If Gore Enters

I would expect that the lower-tier candidates - Dodd, Biden, and Richardson - to quit the race and endorse him. Dodd and Biden served with Al in the Senate, and Richardson was a Cabinet Member in the Clinton/Gore admin. It would be down to Obama, Hillary, and Edwards. There is no love lost between Al and Hillary, from what I understand. So I don't see how it helps Hillary.
