Ladies and Gentlemen we are in a unique position, a position that we didn't think we would be in one year ago today. We have two major candidates left in this race John Kerry and John Edwards. We are about to elect one of them to be our nominee. Our stated goal above all else is one thing: BEAT GEORGE W. BUSH. The question then comes to this: Who is in the best position to do just that?
Disregard all the poll numbers that are set before us. Disregard who past voters have elected to be their 'favorite' candidate. The polls and the minds of voters will change a hundred times between now and November. Here is what we know: Bush is weak and he is losing the moderate middle. Bush's extremist right wing policies have alienated the moderate Republicans. His failed economic policies have alienated everyone but his hardcore supporters. Who is in the best position to take advantage of that critical weakness? The key to this election is to keep the base energized and to attract the disenfranchised moderates.
We only have one candidate left who can do that: John Edwards. He speaks to the hard left when he speaks against NAFTA -- one of two candidates to do that -- and he appeals to the moderates. On top of all that his Charisma rivals that of Bill Clinton. Ladies and Gentlemen we cannot allow this man to escape us.
John Kerry may very well win against Bush, but everyone acknowledges it will be close. One of Bush's minions was already outlining what they were going to use on Kerry, and they were focusing on the things that have been brought up in the past: His record and his constant flip flopping on issues. In a race where Bush's creditability is at stake, and he has $200 Million Dollars to spend, I do not think it is wise to elect someone who can be subjected to the same scrutiny.
What is about to come down the pipe toward us is going to be of epic proportions. The attack from Bush is going to be relentless and he has near limited money to spend. John Edwards has been in this position time and time again in the court room. He's faced battles of epic proportions like this before, where giant Corporations did everything in their power to destroy you and your name. However, he beat them -- he stood up for the little guy.
I understand many people wish to elect Kerry on the bases of his war record; however Vietnam isn't going to be the issue. Bush's AWOL has come out to early in the game and by November it's going to be a dead horse. Americans may be so sick of hearing about it they just might vote for Bush out of spite. We all know the American public likes to be constantly saturated with new juicy stories, and talking about weather or not the President showed up for National Guard Duty nearly a life time ago... to most Americans it doesn't really matter. This isn't a winning issue, and what's more Kerry has personally backed off of it.
So it really comes down to one thing: Do you want to beat Bush and how badly do you want to do it? Are you willing to risk losing by voting for someone who is a liability, a risk, or do you want to vote for someone who can speak to a wide range of people the left and the moderate... leaving Bush with only the extreme right? Keep in mind that opinions change of people over time. Voters change their minds especially in this climate. Votes cast today may be regretted tomorrow. You must vote on someone who you feel can best beat Bush. Take a good look at Edwards and place him in a debate with Bush, and you will see why George Bush, son of a Rich Oil Man is sweating bullets at the thought of going up against John Edwards, son of a Mill Worker. This is a true David and Goliath battle, a battle that John Edwards is ready to fight because he's been fighting them for nearly 20 years.
