. . .party how the hell can that be misogynistic? I want to be sensitive but we are talking about a late night comedy skit about Halloween and witch is a very popular costume. Now if it were a X-mas party it would be something else.

3. It depends what type of spook you are talking about. . .if it was a GOD DAMNED GHOST. . .
. . .it would be fine. Lets be honest a GOD DAMNED WITCH as a FUCKING Halloween costume has never been deemed as politically incorrect. CONTEXT PEOPLE, SOME FUCKING CONTEXT!

9. louder and nastier does not make you more right--it just makes you look
like a _itch. We all know that dehumanzing women has been going on for centuries. Masking it as a joke (like Edwards did when he talked about how bad she looked in a certain colored suit), or calling her a witch in the context of Halloween, does not make it less harmful to women. It just makes it easier to swallow.

12. My brain just froze up.
Making a Hillary witch pun on SNL is sexist, but calling undercoverduer a bitch is okay? Are you for real?

19. I don't support Hillary, I just take umbrage with the Hillary bashers.
I find many of their posts to be offensive and of the personal-attack nature. That gets my attention, and brings me to the table. Rude bullies who use personal attacks don't deserve a pass.

Don't think for a second that posters who are offended by your antics are just offended because they're "Hillary supporters". Not the case at all.

24. Pretending you don't understand the connotation of "witch" as it relates to women
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 03:37 PM by Harper_is_Bush
And then yelling ans swearing your head off at someone who makes a valid (and polite) point.

And no, it aint good.

16. Settle down. Evergreen's point is valid...
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 03:37 PM by Harper_is_Bush
...the "context" you are seeking is in the connotation of the word "witch" as it's used towards women.

If you're going to pretend the connotation wasn't there, you lose credibility. To ask "what's wrong with a witch costume? It's a popular costume." is just silly, given the context that you claim to be interested in.

The comparison of dressing Obama as a ghost and calling him a "spook" sheds light on the context very well.

11. You know, back when SNL was actually funny, I could imagine them using a ghost costume
for Garrett Morris.

Good Comedy knows no fear.

5. What is the context, here? Context is EVERYTHING.
If you are trying to obliquely insult someone by calling them a witch, that's just plain meanness.

The costume itself isn't "mysogynistic," because witches are seen in popular culture and literature as females.

If the goal, though, is to be cruel to someone by suggesting that they are a 'witch' (in the 'bitch' sense) then that's what's called a cheap shot. Childish, funky, and not cool.

Hillary would have made a better choice to dress in pink as a 'good witch'

8. Oh for chrissake. How about this: Is "bitch" not a female dog?
If they'd had Hillary dress up as a dog and called her a "bitch" in the skit, I suppose because animals are popular costumes you'd be confused about that also?

Stop playing dumb. Or look up the term "connotation".

23. She wasn't in a witch costume
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 04:00 PM by Jim4Wes
The joke of the skit was that her opponents and probably some Americans would love to call her a witch.

The only pass I give it, is that it is a silly comedy show.

edited to include "witch costume" as originally intended.
