Plus I could easily imagine a Texan (and not necessarily a redneck) saying Edwards is a pretty boy... among other things.

32. I am trying to change that, in my own small way
I guess I prefer high road politics, and sticking to issues as much as possible, so stay out of the internecine wars. BUT, it has gotten so bad, and I prefer my dem with less scars, and my DU with less animosity. This loooong pre-primary anomalie has caused more strife than ever, exacerbated by Bush fatigue, and it will be more difficult to heal our rifts.

When the nom is chosen (and we actually get to vote in the damn primaries, sheesh) we will need to work together for the greater good. The time to start easing up on the name calling and related BS is NOW, or at least sooner the better. We have a hydra to slay.

4-8 years of relative sanity can be an island in the storm. While not the "promised land" it will be a base from which to go forward. Anyone serious about progressive reform should be able to agree on that.

Please don't let the jerks from ANY candidate sway you from that.

I understand and sympathize with the frustration, though.
We are cats, unherdable by nature, and often scratching and howling at each other.
But it's a scary thing when cats attack as a group.
We can bring down an elephant!

(Historical note: Democrats came very close to having the Tiger as our symbol. too bad the Nast 'toon overrode that)

53. You're right, but we are trying to get it back!
Many Old Texas Dems were often not very progressive to start with, but the Oily Boys went GOP, and many shenanigans took place in terms of votes in the Karl Rove era.

BUT there is a strong culture of progressive populism, best exemplified by Ivins, Richards, Hightower, et al.
And we do NOT give up easily. Remember the Alamo and all that.

I love that sigline too btw - brilliantly, darkly funny!

NOT everyone in Texas is a republicon. You should choose your words more carefully.

those that are paying attention, the dems, for the very large part, I'd wager, dislike her intensely.

but 85-90% of the country doesn't even really know there's a primary season about.

1990 - Ann Richards winning the Governorship.

No Dem has won a state-wide election in Texas since then.

The last time a Dem won a Senate election in Texas was in 1988 (Bentsen).

Richards was defeated, but Bullock, Morales, and several others won that year.

It wasn't until '98 that the Repugs started sweeping the statewide offices.

The fact of the matter is, is that this state is turning blue again. The only reason Perry's governor is because we don't have runoffs in this state. More people voted against him than for him.

And really, fuck all these people broad brushing Texas.

61. There are plenty of good Hillary supporters! And Obama, Edwards, Kuinich, etc
It's kind of like a Newton's law of assholery - equal and opposite reaction, you know?

We can spread some love around, and still disagree on policy.
We can pull together and beat the GOP, so we can make PROGRESS.

Ronny has been snarky, but is a hilariously funny and (I would bet my life) GOOD person, as are you.
And you are doing good by spreading your love.
I have also been snarky, and am somewhat good. Occasionally...:)

Together, we are going to kick some ass.
We came close last time, but too many asses did not get how fucked up Bush was until 2005.
They are just not as smart as we are.

64. Here's my point
Even Ronny posted that this headline was freeperish- even he knew that it did nothing to help his candidate.

But other supporters seem to think they can win people over to Hillary's camp by bullying and calling other candidates childish names. I can't for the life of me imagine how they think it is helping their candidate. I like Hillary, it's her supporters I have a problem with.

And I think that if you search my posts, there are very few- if any - where I was negative towards any other candidate, other than posts inquiring how this one or that one stood, how they voted, why they weren't doing something about things now that they are in the senate (which 4 of them are). But I try not to sling mud and right wing talking points. I wish others would do the same.

72. I was perhaps not clear, I was agreeing with you that ronny is good along with others
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 10:49 PM by Bongo Prophet
I guess it goes with the theme of the thread - there are good Texans, good supporters of candidates, etc. - and that ronny and your friendly posts were examples of that. In NO way was I meaning to imply that you were part of the problem. That was probably me being all preachy.O8)

Earlier, there was a thread where I teased ronnie (gently, and in a fun way I hope) because he/she called someone "full of shit". Actually, the other poster might well have been (full of it), but that was not the point.
But I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't already see the value and humor in some of ronny's posts. Rather than spending time in tit for tat short posts, I would like to see longer and more thoughtful dialog develop. Likeable, sane and funny are all assets on this board, and the sooner we start actively working towards that dialog, the easier it will be to pull together and kick some GOP ass.

I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed by this type of vitriol that you speak of, and would prefer smart and funny people to show their best sides, and they will get:
more support for their candidate
better environment on DU, which might allow us to hear each other

I agree with you so much about far too many DUers are flinging poo all about, and that it is corrosive.
Our points are therefore the same.
right on! :hi:

edited cause my syntax was kookooo

People call Tom Brady a pretty boy

Never saw them or their fans throw a fit over it

And is a more than subtle attack on his masculinity.

39. Oh, like it won't be all wrapped up by March 8th anyway.
Everyone I know here who is paying attention in the least hasn't really bothered to pick a candidate because we all know it won't matter much.

83. Well, if you actually look at the poll
Published in BOR, especially the crosstabs, the percentage of Undecideds has been dropping from around twenty percent back in March to less than 8% in November. And it sure looks like most of that has broken Clinton's way.

60. Texas. The state that gave us BUSH.
And Cornyn.

And DeLay.

And I won't go on because I'll get sick. Texas needs to WAKE THE SHIT UP, they are one of the few states even worse than Oklahoma (land of Inhofe)! :puke:

63. We're working on it, Andy.
Worse than Oklahoma? Oh, now you have cut us deep :)
Actually, Oklahoma is okay too.

Edwards had pretty high numbers last time, and it is still early.
Crispini's point about us being so late a primary that people don't pay much attention this early is a good one.
Plus, we have BIG OIL interests holding us hostage monetarily, and BIG RELIGION brainwashing the kids and adults alike.
Pretty rough.

BUT!

We will see. It will probably still go GOP in 08, no matter the candidate - but over time, we will get back to dem representation.
It's all in the DEMographics.

68. So what does it say for Clinton that she is so "popular"
in a state that elected * four times? I'm just wondering what your point is here...

74. Earth to Texas
The reputation the state holds among people in most of the country and around the world is one of arrogance and irrationality.

Sad, but true. It wasn't always like that.
