Republicans Like Obama or Edwards as Democratic Pick
Hillary Clinton may be a Democratic favorite, but if Republicans had to choose which Democratic candidate they'd like to see win the nomination, she wouldn't be the pick. In a new poll released today by the Pew Research Center, the two candidates who are closely following Clinton in the polls—Barack Obama and John Edwards—are more popular with GOP voters. Twenty-one percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters said they'd pick Obama to win the nomination, and 17 percent chose Edwards. Clinton came in third, with 11 percent.

A quarter of Democrats and Democratic-leaning respondents said they'd like to see Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani win the GOP nomination, and 21 percent said they'd like to see moderate Republican John McCain on the general election ballot.

Libertarian-learning Republican candidate Ron Paul, whose campaign has recently brought in several million dollars online, garnered only 5 percent support from Democrats. His campaign is unique in its efforts to capture voters from both sides of the aisle by advertising online the deadlines in which prospective independent and Democratic voters can change their party registration to the GOP.

1. Yes ... the Democrats would like to see Rudy Guiliani as the GOP candidate
for the same reasons I do: he's got more baggage than the claims room at United Airlines. Not because we'd ever dream of voting for him.

These polls are too weird: people's motivations for choosing a candidate from the other party are never clear, and probably very diverse: from sincere liking them to sheer mendacity.

I guess Hillary wins on this poll.

Yeah, he does....and rumor has it, he's about to have his "bag" rifled through again...publicly....the FDNY is mailing out fliers on a wide scale, and doing commercials charging Rudy with lots of things surrounding 911. Should be an all out assault, suppose to start in a week or two.

Here's the story;

By CARL CAMPANILE

MR. SEPTEMBER: Rudy Giuliani's campaign has been mailing this flier, which touts his 9/11 leadership, to Iowa and New Hampshire voters.

To Giuliani it made a lot of sense to put the command post at WTC7, that way it was easy to erase all evidence. That's a mobsters MO, no surprises there...

November 19, 2007 -- Rudy Giuliani is trumpeting his leadership in the wake of 9/11 in campaign mailings to voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.
In one piece, Giuliani is hailed as "America's Mayor" who displayed "Strength through Leadership."
While Giuliani's supporters have long boasted about his performance after the attacks, he himself had not, until now, mentioned it as prominently.
"After the worst attacks on US soil, Rudy Giuliani went to work rebuilding New York City and faith in America," reads the mailing, which features a photo of the former mayor set over the city skyline.
Giuliani, it says, "led the largest rescue and recovery operation in US history."
A group of 9/11 families and firefighters who oppose Giuliani's candidacy were outraged.
"Giuliani is running on 9/11 and portraying himself as a hero. It's disgusting. It's horrible," FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Jim Riches said.
"This guy will do anything to get elected."
"He's misleading voters and distorting the truth. He didn't prepare the first responders for a terrorist attack. The Office of Emergency Management was a joke that day. There was a lack of communication. People died unnecessarily."
The mailing also says Giuliani "refused to raise taxes after the attacks - refuting calls from Democrats to do so."
The group of 9/11 families and firefighters will be in New Hampshire today to argue that he failed to adequately prepare for a terrorist attack.
The group has also questioned Giuliani's management of the cleanup effort, claiming thousands of Ground Zero workers got sick because they weren't given protective masks.
"I understand the emotions surrounding Sept. 11, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that it was the terrorists who attacked New York City," said firefighter and Giuliani campaign adviser Lee Ielpi, whose son, Jonathan, died on 9/11.
Giuliani has repeatedly challenged accusations that his candidacy is based solely on the attacks, saying during a recent debate, "The reality is that I'm not running on what I did on Sept. 11."
The mailing also touts his record in the Justice Department and as a US attorney.

2. That's rather surprising. It certainly counters the conventional wisdom around here.
Many DUers have repeatedly insisted that the Republicans' heavily favored candidate is Hillary.

6. The argument is that Republicans who want Republicans to win want HRC on ballot.
I don't think you can tell from this survey whether Republicans are saying they like Obama and Edwards, would like to vote for Edwards and Obama, or that they'd like them on the ticket so that Demcorats will lose.

I'm sure somebody paid a lot of money to get results with that level of detail. Meanwhile, DU'ers have to settle for spinning this poll.

3. It's obvious why Obama/Edwards are preferred: THEY WOULD BOTH LOSE!
I think Democrats should choose a candidate without the help and guidance of Ann Coulter. Thank you very much.

9. I totally agree with you!
I don't feel that either Obama or Edwards are electable.

5. It's not surprising that the two non-Hillary candidates have more cross-over appeal.

This could bode well in the General Election if we do the right thing and pick someone who can actually win.

10. Crossover appeal?!!!
How do you know it's not because Obama and Edwards would lose big in the general? Because that's what I'm getting from this.

7. They sure don't want Biden. He's too smart and has too much experience in foreign relations.

8. As far as Edwards, it's easy to understand. He was their staunch ally when he was in the Senate
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 12:16 PM by mtnsnake
His voting record more resembled that of the neocon agenda than it did any progressive agenda, despite his recent flip-flop that he's some kind of born-again Progressive for purposes of schmoozing the base of our Party in the Primaries.

Obama OTOH is much more Progressive than Edwards could ever dream of, and he has the record to back it up.
