Bush: Hillary Clinton 'understands pressure'

President Bush, who has retreated to Camp David in the Maryland mountains for the Thanksgiving holiday, says Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York understands "pressure'' -- more so than any of the other candidates seeking his job. "No question, there is no question that Sen. Clinton understands pressure better than any of the candidates, you know, in the race,'' Bush told ABC News' Charlie Gibson in an interview at Camp David that will air on this evening's World News.

"I do believe our candidate will beat her,'' Bush added, "if she happens to be the nominee.'' The president, however, declined to speculate on the outcome of his own party's race, calling it "wide open.'' Bush, whose father lost his bid for a second term to then-Gov. Bill Clinton in 1992, called the former first lady a "very formidable candidate" in this interview with ABC -- repeatedly saying she and the former president "understand the klieg lights".

First Lady Laura Bush, also interviewed, said experience as a first lady could be "very helpful'' in the White House. "You certainly know what it's like," Mrs. Bush said, "you know the pressure, there is, you know the difficulties."

The first lady later added: "I think it was very helpful for us to have been...around the White House as much as we were when his parents served there." ABC will air more this evening on its nightly news as well as the later Nightline program and on Wednesday morning's Good Morning America.

Also, to be very clear, this is a Hillary-neutral post. I posted it for the reason listed above...Bush was over-confident during November 2006 and we all saw the results.

I'm well aware of

1). the whole pro-Hillary/anti-Hillary thing

2). the whole pro-Edwards/anti-Edwards thing

3). the whole pro-Obama/anti-Obama thing

on DU, and for the most part, I stay out of those discussions. Not my cup of tea.

I think that it's a very nice picture of Barack and Hillary.

I guess that some forget that Hillary campaigned for Obama and that she took him under her wing when he entered the senate and showed him the ropes (just as Sen. Byrd did for her at one time).

They may be on opposing sides at the moment, but I don't think that they dislike each other.

My fears about her electability are now fully revived. The problem on the Democratic side is daunting: if not Hillary...who?

I would say that Joe Biden is an excellent alternative but he's still lanquishing in the single digits pollwise. I'm developing a new appreciation for the old "smoke filled room" method of tapping a nominee. Not so democratic or open but it had some real wisdom....sometimes.
