Yes, double standards are a problem:
Were "the masses" all upset over one and not the other? Were those NOT upset about Nevada, now very upset? Yes and yes. But what a minor thing to focus on. In a way, there is no single "masses" here, but several gangs, each with their own mass.......and gravity......;) In other words, some were upset at Nevada but many were not, and so with Iowa. Most of us would NOT post our non-outrage over a relative non-issue - the microcosm gangwar of a tiny minority pitched in fierce battle is non-representative of DU as a whole or the electorate at large. This point on self-selection is made repeated in relation to the "I have never met any body that like Hil, so NO ONE does" fallacy. Since the point is made by your particular gang, I am sure you will understand its truth. People rely on this tactic all the time to pump up their apparent power. Like a Blowfish! We are mighty and many and all that. But it is not reality.
Here is how this non-aligned progressive saw it: I watched it LIVE on c-span, and honestly, I don't think she was booed that badly. Rather, anti-Clinton folks are hyping this, and apparantly the rightwing and corpmedia are picking that meme too. I think that is a stupid distraction. It is unfortunate that she could not be there in person - the speakerphone and 2 second delay set up a "distant" atmosphere. In person, she could have been more...personable.;) So to the level or amount of booing - CNN might have a different mike, (shades of DeanScream) so we should be wary of that. Some people WANT to encourage infighting within the dems, you know? It was noticeable, but I just shrugged my shoulders, saying, "But she's right about that" out loud. And I thought of the wisdom of giving the GOP a BIG pet issue in the first 100 days - what a horrorshow! See, because I'm not hyper-aligned to a candidate, her answer made me THINK about the strategic implications and NOT "Ooh she got booed! Must be a plant! How beleagered we are and so on. So I may be coming from a different place altogether from advocates. And I would guess most people are NOT hyper-aligned or hyper-sensitized to insult and ready to rush to battle.
For comparison, when Edwards was booed in Nevada, my thoughts were that he was going a bit too long in the attack, and that dems are showing that they don't want the level of attacks to rise too high amongst our own. This in the context of the media trying to get infighting by saying the others HAD to do that to move up. Some of us are tired of the fake "debate" BS -things like the CNN reframing questions, or Lightning rounds, or pile-on the frontrunner and exclude the lower tier and on and on. there is a big dissatisfaction with this degenerated process. I believe that pent up frustration adds to the edginess. Hell, CNN even encouraged the crowd to be rowdy there. The people love a circus, so they think. But not when our lives and freedoms are at stake.
But here was something POSITIVE: The crowd was a mix of very young people (under 18), homeless advocates, so called "ethinic underclass" and fellow HUMANS, There were people tearing up while testifying about the INS taking away their parents. People worthy of sympathy at the least. . One hyper-aligned poster dismissed them as assholes and I take exception to that broad characterization of a crowd so diverse. Real people, with real issues, and no corpmedia filter. Getting a chance to talk a bit before asking a question. And the questions were genuine and heartfelt. No diamond/pearls, no yankees/cubs BS, no Wolf. In that sense it was GREAT.
Sen. Clinton answered that question honestly, so I would not insult her even if I disagreed. Her answer was a fair representation of her thoughts, and yes of course a case can be made for it. Personally, I think a hot button GOP dominated issue should NOT be an early priority in any Dem admininstration. Healthcare and foreign policy easy victories and beginning a new sense of responsible governmant back will lay a better groundwork of success and competency. That would be better for the Country - progressive, centrists and rightwingers alike. So on this issue maybe Obama folks might think I am an idiot, or delusional or whatever. But just a non-representational few. I hope!
such is my audacity. ;)
Anyway, Even though your OP was maybe meant to provoke, I thought I would share some thoughts. Take it also as an example of what DUers who stay out of the gang wars might add to the discussion if we get past the childishness. Personally, having fellow dems engaging in sincere conversations is ONE of the things we can do here.
