The opening of John Edwards’ Newton campaign office looked a little like a Hollywood movie premiere Sunday afternoon. However, in place of the traditional red carpet there was a thin sheet of ice layering the sidewalks and streets as two notable actresses visited the city in support of the Democratic presidential candidate.
Jean Smart, who is well-known for her role as Charlene Frazier on the 1990’s hit TV show “Designing Women” and who is currently on ABC’s “Samantha Who,” and Madeleine Stowe, who has been in numerous films including “Twelve Monkeys,” “The Last of the Mohicans” and “The Two Jakes,” made a stop in Newton to help drum up support for their choice for the next president of the United States.
“I am supporting him now for many of the things he stood for from when I first met him in 2003,” said Smart, who also voiced the character of the Maytag repairman’s wife on a sketch appearing on Cartoon Network’s “Robot Chicken.” “I continue to be struck by how passionate he is about his beliefs.”
Smart said she is supporting Edwards and traveling to show her support because she believes he is the most-electable candidate and he will stand by his campaign promises.
