What popular and successful Democratic President has NOT been polarizing?
Kennedy was polarizing. FDR was polarizing.

I think any strong candidate is bound to be polarizing. Rethugs don't mind us when we're weak, but they hate it when we're successful.

1. Ah, there are some who still froth at the mouth when you say "FDR."
Edited on Wed Dec-05-07 08:09 PM by aquart
Much better, of course, to vote for a "uniter, not a divider."

2. JFK was incredibly polarizing.
So polarizing, in fact, that theories have abounded for more than 40 years about who might have hated him enough to have him killed.

3. Which, is why I like Joe Biden...
most of the republicans like him...in the senate that is. At a minimum, they have a lot of respect towards him. This would go a long way with him in the WH. Maybe we could actually get some shit done then...

8. Polarizing Presidents can succeed in getting things done.
FDR was polarizing in large part because he was successful in getting things done. Anyone pushing hard for change is bound to be polarizing, because the reactionary forces will be pushing back just as hard.

4. Dennis Kucinich
The only people who hate him here, are those who promote agendas which never had any place in the Democratic party to begin with.

5. Kucinich would be extremely polarizing in the general election,
because he stands for something.

10. If standing for something is wrong, then this country is truly lost once and for all

And if stopping that means being as polarized as penguins and polar bears, then sign me up.

Because if we don't change things drastically now, the penguins and polar bears are both fucked anyway. Followed soon by the rest of us. I know I've seen enough flooding this week to last me a while (though none on the home front, thank God)

14. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that being a polarizing figure
is not necessarily bad, because few Presidents can accomplish much, particularly in times of change, without being polarizing.

12. The Repukes will show up no matter who we nominate.
The hate radio listeners will show up if Hillary is nominated, because they somehow believe she's "liberal" :eyes:
The racist bastards will turn out in droves to vote against Obama or Richardson.

At least when they come out to vote against Dennis, they would be challenged by all the returning voters who won't vote for a DLC warmongering corporatist, but WILL vote for President Kucinich. I like those odds myself.

15. That is true.
But HRC is usually the one who is given the label "polarizing." And I'm saying that whether it's HRC, or Kucinich, or any other strong Democrat, that person will draw opposition as strong as the support given by our side -- and thus will be polarizing. We shouldn't use the fear of being polarizing to discount the worth of any candidate.

13. Dennis is completely sane
or at least as sane as anyone in this country can be after 7 years of fascism.

I would say the ones who support a continuation of the PNAC agenda in any form, and the multinational corporate destruction of America's middle class, are the ones whose sanity should be called into question.

9. Truman wasn't polarizing. When he left office the country had a unified opinion of him
No president has left office with lower approval ratings. I will not print a clarification to this statement for another 15 months. Of course he's now counted by historians as a near-great president.

23. It's out there for
anyone to see but of course the die hard supporters are blinded by WHAT I do not know.

She's my senator and she's a fucking bushite enabler and wants to be president so bad she stabbed John Kerry in the back right before our eyes. She just lied about her enabling vote on Iran like no one is paying attention(she thinks everyone is like you).

18. Didn't LBJ have the biggest margin of victory ever (actual, not electoral votes)?
People rallied around him after the assassination, and he used that momentum that support gave him to pass his Great Society programs (and he needed that support, or the south would hated him).

Unfortunately, Vietnam reversed his momentum.
