. . .I'm very disappointed in this. Its time to revisit this thread I posted during the McClurkin controversy.

When you accuse the OP of having "hate in his heart" and say that's the reason for his anger, that's pretty much laying the blame on him. It's certainly excusing Kerry and Imus.

27. If you listened to the show, he said absolutely nothing bad when the Senator was there
As to women, he spoke well of both hiw own wife's and THK's on healthcare. Kerry spoke of his trip to South Africa, where he was looking into what was being done on AIDS - he and Frist wrote the legislation that greatly increased the money spent.

The entire conversation - on both sides was more intelligent than the garbage on any of the cable shows.

50. True, but if he never came on
Imus would simply have attacked him always. The media was not a friend to the Democrats in 2000 and even less so in 2004. Kerry was able to reach people directly when he was on - and I heard any time when Kerry didn't completely win when he was on. Give me a list of alternative shows where that happened. Kerry did very well on MTP, Hardball and Blitzer, because he is very sharp - but in all of those shows there was a lot of tension from the "gotcha" nature of the questions - even as he answered them well.

I have heard really great interviews with New England Cable Network and a few Boston area shows. I loved many of the NPR interviews that I heard around the time of the Kerrys' book. But these do not have a huge viewership.

Even if they did have a huge viewership, it often gets completely washed out by the magnitude and madness of rightwing hate radio. The viewership there seems to thrive, unfortunately.

The miracle would be if Kerry or any of the senators got together and rescinded the media concentration they brought about.

Kerry's sucking up to people like Midnight Cowboy Imus and his craven little sidekick is one of the reasons I was not enthusiastic about his candidacy.

Yet when asked about Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 movie by lamestream media, Kerry bristled saying he hadn't seen it and didn't intend to see it.

I will never forget his disdainful expression... distancing himself from MM while cozying up to Imus. Sure Imus is an equal opportunity basher but what bothered/bothers me is how the repukes never distance themselves from Rush, O'Leilly, Hannity, etc. and in fact credited Rush with helping them win in the entire congress and several governorships in 1994 while Dems run from MM, MoveOn, etc.

Sheesh

Edited on Thu Dec-06-07 01:56 PM by blm
the relationships between Bush family, Bin Ladens, House of Saud and Dubai came from the YEARS OF WORK John Kerry put into uncovering and investigating IranContra and BCCI.

Nice of Moore - and other scholars - to acknowledge that if it HADN'T been for Kerry there would have BEEN NO investigations into IranContra and BCCI at all - meaning no exposure of Poppy Bush's involvements or their global agenda, and Poppy would have stayed president in 93, and this nation would likely be in its 10th year as a fascist state.

That's all. But nice of Moore and other scholars to notice, eh?

Kerry Seeks to Reverse FCC's "Wrongheaded Vote"
Commission Decision May Violate Laws Protecting Small Businesses; Kerry to File Resolution of Disapproval
Monday, June 2, 2003

WASHINGTON - Senator John Kerry today announced plans to file a "Resolution of Disapproval" as a means to overturn today's decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to raise media ownership caps and loosen various media cross-ownership rules.

Kerry will soon introduce the resolution seeking to reverse this action under the Congressional Review Act and Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act on the grounds that the decision may violate the laws intended to protect America's small businesses and allow them an opportunity to compete.

As Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerry expressed concern that the FCC's decision will hurt localism, reduce diversity, and will allow media monopolies to flourish. This raises significant concerns about the potential negative impacts the decision will have on small businesses and their ability to compete in today's media marketplace.

In a statement released earlier today regarding the FCC's decision, Kerry said:

"Nothing is more important in a democracy than public access to debates and information, which lift up our discourse and give Americans an opportunity to make honest informed choices. Today's wrongheaded vote by the Republican members of the FCC to loosen media ownership rules shows a dangerous indifference to the consolidation of power in the hands of a few large entities rather than promoting diversity and independence at the local level. The FCC should do more than rubber stamp the business plans of narrow economic interests.

"Today's vote is a complete dereliction of duty. The Commissioners are well aware that these rules greatly influence the competitive structure of the industry and protect the public's access to multiple sources of information and media. It is the Commission's responsibility to ensure that the rules serve our national goals of diversity, competition, and localism in media. With today's vote, they shirked that responsibility and have dismissed any serious discussion about the impact of media consolidation on our own democracy."

BTW - Kerry was also the Senator who crafted and submitted the first Public financing of Campaigns legislation in 1997 - Clean Money, Clean Elections. Wellstone added to it, too. Five senators voted FOR it. Several states have now adapted it for their own elections.

We can't overturn capitalism, no matter how much we'd prefer to challenge its nearly unlimited banalities.

Of which Imus is often one.

At the same time, pressure can be brought to bear using the same revenue avenue in the form of boycotts. An economic squeeze on the sponsors will turn network heads much faster than you or I calling Imus a bigot.

He's not the only bigot out there, just one of the most famous.

Is it the way he talked nicely to Kerry to his face early in 2004, only to turn on him shortly afterward and stab him in the back?

Is it the way he made so many bigoted remarks all through the years until it finally caught up with him?

Is it the drool that drips down the side of his ugly face as he speaks that makes him so cool?

The show was excellent - which is why MSNBC kept him for so long.

He had everyone on his show in the morning and it was much more informative than CSPAN. It was a time for all the reporters to let their hair down and talk about what they really thought. Great stuff. Funny too.

When he made fun of Kerry, it was hilarious. Especially about the "botched joke" thing. I wonder if that video is posted on the web.

why SHOULDN'T Democrats help him stay commited to that goal?

Imagine if David Brock apologized for his role in helping the RW takeover of DC in the 90s and everyone pushed him away and said get lost they don't need his commitment to make a positive change......and so he proceeded to get lost. Redemption followed by positive actions works and can bring others along with it.

54. c'mon now, blm. Do you really give a rats ass about Imus or are you just worried about Kerry's rep?

56. I care that Imus was one of the few voices dumping on Bush and Cheney in a way that

helped bring Bush's numbers down with the center-right crowd.

You really don't GET that my war is with BFEE and the fascist agenda of the last 4 decades that has been closing off our government's accountability to the citizens, and that Kerry just HAPPENS to be one of the few heroes in that decades-long war. If Henry Gonzalez was alive and in the congress, I'd be watching his back, too. BushInc and the DC powerstructure NEEDS lawmakers like Kerry to go away and use every media opportunity they have to make it happen.

I already know you don't mind the protection of secrecy and privilege, and don't seem to care that YOUR disinterest in open government, also just happens to effect those of us who DO care. Spend some time on corruption threads and tap into the National Security Archives - take your responsibility as a CITIZEN seriously.

58. Imus started getting on Bush only when it became vogue for most neocons to do so
so don't be so quick to give him a medal for "dumping on Bush and Cheney" when he did far more damage to our side than theirs. Or did you forget about how Imus blamed Kerry for everything that went wrong?

82. Yes - and when more info came out on Iraq he changed his mind. Bill Clinton supported
Bush on all his terrorism and Iraq war decisions for longer than Imus did, and did so PUBLICALLY throughout his summer/2004 book tour.

Bill and Hillary ONLY adjusted their support leftward AFTER Joe Lieberman lost his primary race in 2006.

and go right back into business. The American way.

That's why I don't understand when we turn against each other. Any time a regular person can get a break in this country, I'm for it.

59. I love JK and I'm disgusted
But apparently Imus' wife and Theresa work together on environmental health issues, so it is slightly understandable. Also, if Hillary is the one who really ran Imus off the air, then I can understand JK's loyalty too.

Because this thread brings out the bashers and haters who say that that he is "sucking up to him" or condoning what he did, when he is against everything that Old Pimp is for (aka making sexist, racist jokes) and personally insulting people on the air.

I am sorry, but I disagree.

A little smack on the hand isn't reality, it's just a little smack on the hand.

IMUS took some heat, not the worst person in the world, but NOT my cup of tea either, even BEFORE the flak!! Guess he has some sort of charisma, don't really know!

Hey, Limpballs keeps getting raises! Got a million dollars after he went to Rehab!! Too bad it doesn't work for the rest of us out here!

Imus was a racist pig long before he got caught. He should have been off the air a long time before he got the boot. I am pissed that anyone outside of the Klan would go on his show. Shame on all of them.

68. I'm not ashamed that anyone goes on Imus because I don't believe he is a "racist pig." Now
Giuliani, he's a racist pig! Imus probably has more support in NY than that lying SOB! Too bad the media didn't pummel Giuliani the minute he announced as a candidate for president the way they did a Imus when it was convenient for them to do so!

Why is Imus back? He won his case against them for firing him when a suspension would have sufficed, especially since the Rutgers team accepted his apology.

I'm glad Kerry did this!

Edited on Thu Dec-06-07 05:14 PM by sampsonblk
Almost all his jokes were racial. And he was appreciated by blacks and whites alike. Pryor told a lot of gay jokes too.

And don't forget George Carlin, who told the funniest black joke I ever heard.

78. Consider that DU had threads backing Whoopi Goldberg
when she trashed Kerry because he would not say that her jokes were ok at a fund raiser - Kerry did not condemn her, but she apparently thought he should go out on a limb to defend her.

Do you think that Kerry and Richardson should ostracize everyone who makes a racial or sexist joke? Or what about those who go beyond a sexist joke into inappropriate sexual behavior. Shouldn't we hold the office holders to higher behavior. I didn't hear Richardson, but there was nothing in anything Kerry said that discredits him in the least from this mornings show.

81. DU had threads bashing Bob Hope the day he died.....so what?
DU has many hate filled posters. I merely state that I despise Imus and I hated him long before his trashy "nappy headed ho" filth. He disrespects women, minorities and most Democrats (except for his buddies like Lieberman etal). He uses his podium to preach against progressives and I had great hopes that he would finally be forced to STFU.

Sadly, in America, bug bucks rule.

You ask if I would have Kerry and Richardson ostracize everyone who makes a racist or sexist joke, or someone who engages in inappropriate sexual behavior. Simple answer: yes. Democrats give these freaks legitimacy by appearing on their programs. Boycott Imus, Fox, Limbaugh, Scarborough, Carlson and anyone else who use their power and microphones to denigrate women, minorities and gays.

If you lie down with dogs, your going to get fleas. Kerry should know this by now. He made a dumb move here but thats certainly nothing new where he's concerned.
