Poll shows Wisconsin voters favor Fred Thompson, Clinton

MADISON — A new poll shows that Wisconsin Democrats favor Hillary Clinton for president, and Republicans like Fred Thompson, but no candidate is a clear front runner.

Forty-seven percent of respondents in the University of Wisconsin Survey Center’s Badger Poll released Monday said they would vote for a Democrat for president next year, while 39 percent would chose a Republican.

In Monday’s poll, 39 percent of Democrats and independents who were leaning that way said they wanted to see Clinton win the nomination. She was followed by Barack Obama with 26 percent and John Edwards at 15 percent. That question had a margin of error of 6 percentage points.

Among Republicans and independents leaning that way, 30 percent said they favored Thompson as their nominee, followed by Rudy Giuliani at 25 percent and John McCain at 15 percent. The margin of error was 7.4 percentage points.
