Bloomberg: a Bachelor President? WTF?
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 11:36 AM by Bleachers7
I saw this article today and all I could think of is WTF? Where is this coming from? It's written as if it's a given that he's running. Who pushed ABC to write this? Is this Bloomy just trying to keep his name out there?

For all of his billions, Mayor Michael Bloomberg lacks one thing all the current presidential candidates proudly display: a spouse.

The country has not elected a bachelor president since 1884, when Grover Cleveland won the White House despite newspapers huffing that "a man who will not marry a woman and take care of her has no right to be a president."

Singles haven't had much luck getting nominated either. The last unwed candidate chosen by a major party was Adlai Stevenson, the divorced Democrat who lost to Republican Dwight Eisenhower twice in the 1950s.

Bloomberg, 65, has a companion of seven years, Diana Taylor, and essentially lives with her. Their arrangement and his star-studded past love life would present him with new political territory to navigate if he runs.

1. Geez, he really got around, didn't he? Diana Ross?
I guess they're laying the groundwork of getting all the "shocking" stuff out there so that it's not an issue in the spring.

2. You Know... Bloomberg Is One Person I DON'T Want To Run!!
He's real trouble for ALL candidates running, even IF he's been all over the place as a politician!

Democrat, Republican & Independent... that takes in a LOT of territory and he has money out the WAZOO!!

3. Does Dobbs know that he's running?
Dobbs was pretty cocky about an independent running. Is Bloomberg the one? I imagine that Dobbs would know.

Also think of the catastrophe that would be a Hillary-Rudy/Romney race. Bloomberg would be able to pull from Hillary and the republican in a big way.

4. My take is if Hillary wins the nom, Bloomberg will run--doesn't
matter who the Repub is. He'd pull from Repubs mostly--they are an extremely weak slate. If Obama is the nominee, he won't run. I think that's why he met with Obama--probably offering his support if Obama goes into the general.

5. I think you're right.
That meeting was no accident. Bloomberg is an interesting character. I think Bloomberg would do quite well against Hillary and the pukes. They are dying for a serious candidate. And Hillary does terrible with independents.

6. That is an Interesting Theory
but I don't understand the thought process behind it. Can you expand, or do you have evidence or quotes that would support that?

8. I have read articles in which aides said he planned to run if at least one
of the nominees had low-favorability ratings--to me, that screams Hillary. Also, Mikey would run on a non-partisan theme--Obama has that ground already covered. There would be no reason for him to run against Obama.

"The country has not elected a bachelor president since 1884, when Grover Cleveland won the White House despite newspapers huffing that "a man who will not marry a woman and take care of her has no right to be a president."

We don't know if Bloomy is running or not but all that.."it's never happened before" stuff is hysterical..that expression or cliche, "there's a first time for everything" wasn't coined for nothing.

Didn't ol Ike(as much as I like him in retrospect) have a bit of fluff going on the side?

How cool that Bloomberg hasn't felt the need for a piece of paper from city hall.

9. He's anti-marriage, I think--
I read somewhere that someone asked him how he felt about gay marriage, and he said something to the effect of, why shouldn't they be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us? I had to laugh at that.

have great experiences in the marriage department and others just know they weren't meant for it. But, there's some successful ones and they are most fortunate. That doesn't mean the rest of us aren't lucky, too. :)

11. Bloomberg aside, there seems to be some validity to the claim about bachelor candidates
Dennis Kucinich is arguably doing better in the current campaign than in 2003-04. He hasn't changed his political positions, but he has changed his marital status.

15. And he's changed his name recognition.
He was completely unknown in 2004. He's a little better known now.

13. Andrea Mitchell gave him a big, long, fawning interview on energy and environmental
issues last month, and concluded the interview by saying, "Sounds like a candidate's stump speech". A woman who's married to the ULTIMATE money man would admire someone like Bloomberg, I suppose.

17. For Sure... Not To Be Rude... But Don't Mitchell & Greenspan Resemble
each other>> I know she's had lot of Plastic Surgery because she's been around a long time, but they seem to "suit" each other!

I'm soooooo bad!

14. Maxine Waters asked the same thing about Nader
It is a question people ask about men and women "of a certain age" who aren't married--who if anybody are their bed partners? If there are none then why not?

I don't understand how or why this is an issue in 2007.
