From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller and NBC's Abby LivingstonMANCHESTER, Iowa -- Edwards repackaged his economic policies with young families in mind at a town hall in northeastern Iowa Friday afternoon. He called for incentives for young adults to save, a national predatory lending law and regulation of credit card companies.
"One of the things that we want to help young families and young people in general with is the debt that so many of them are faced with, and there are a number of things we need to do to deal with that," he said.
He also reiterated his policies for young children, including universal pre-K for 4-year-olds and helping younger children with nutrition and child care (by expanding the child care tax credit) and ran down his plan for universal health care and training young adults for green jobs through community colleges and high schools.
Preceding the afternoon event, Kate Michelman, president emeritus of NARAL Pro-Choice America, moderated a conference call with female office holders to discuss Edwards’ “New Young Families Rising Agenda.” Most of the call covered Edwards’ policy plans, but former New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid threw a few jabs Hillary Clinton’s way.
“I think it's significant that we are all women...and we are choosing John Edwards over someone who would be the first woman president,” she said. Later, Madrid followed up using the code word “triangulating” to hit Clinton. “These aren't times for us to select a nominee who spends so much time compromising, triangulating, consensus, mediates, poll reads. It's time we need a real leader.”
Meanwhile, an Edwards aide said that reaction from yesterday's
Des Moines Register debate is prompting the campaign to prepare a new ad based on the former senator's fight against "corporate greed." The aide said the ad would be released at least in Iowa in the next day or two.
