This Des Moines Register endorsement is HUGE for Hillary
Not necessarily because of the endorsment per se but because it changes the whole media "storyline" when she badly needs it. She needed some good news. She got it.

She can say the slide is over, the momentum has shifted, and she's on the comeback the last 3 weeks, fighting hard everyday to win Iowa.

10. Their selections don't usually win.
They aren't necessarily on the same wavelength as the voters.

obama and edwards were competing vigorously with Hillary for the endorsement and she got it. You can spin it all you want but the fact is this is a good day for Hillary, the first good day she's had in weeks.

that it isn't the end of the world based on history.

But Iowans don't necessarily listen to wht the media feeds them anyway. We'll see whether it has an impact on election day.

7. well it helps for Hillary to get out there with her message everyday
and not be distracted with dozens of different stories about how her campaign is facing the brink of the end, in turmoil, etc. Like I said, the value of it is it changes the media storyline and momentum.

6. You do know that the next line will be that the DMR's choice hasn't actually won
the caucus or nomination for decades.

The Register endorsed John Edwards in 2004....Bill Bradley in 2000....No one in 1992....Paul Simon in 1988...

11. I've never understood the DMR endorsements
They have this habit of endorsing people who don't hold the positions their editorials usually do. And they've done it again. A usually-progressive paper endorsing HRC. Completely mystifying.

Politics as usual wins another endorsement.

Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 09:25 PM by democrat2thecore
All this does is raise her expectations with the media. Iowans are not going with Hillary Clinton and she will be deflated again - but even worse with the raised expectations due to this endorsement.

15. Congrats to Clintonites on very good Saturday evening news..

Every candidate would've enjoyed their endorsement. We read on here last night how her staff had been working on this endorsement for months --- and whatever they did --- it paid off.

Kudos to the HRC crew ~

23. Actually, if it helps Hillary it will hurt Obama the most
as polls have shown that most of Hillary's lost support went to Obama. Personally, I don't think it will matter at all.

25. I disagree. Edwards has been practically LIVING in IA. Not getting this endorsement hurts HIM
since he was widely expected to get it. Obama will come out neither helped nor hurt by this.

32. Don't kid yourself. If it helps Clinton it hurts everyone a little.
but as I said, it will draw the most votes from Obama because he has been taking the most votes from Hillary and that is just a fact. Edwards will stay about the same though an endorsement would have helped him. Edwards may lose a little support but probably not as much as Obama. Though as I said, it will probably have very little impact by the time people begin to vote.

34. I'm not kidding myself. Obama won't be hurt by this. Edwards will.
Edwards put all his eggs in Iowa's basket. This may be another nail in his coffin. This endorsement won't make the people who left Hillary go back to her.

24. Congrats to the Clinton campaign
I'm an Edwards supporter myself, but this is good news for Hillary. Not a slam-dunk for an Iowa win...no newspaper endorsement is, particularly in Iowa. Still, good news for her and she deserves congratulations for it.

Indeed, Obama, her chief rival, inspired our imaginations. But it was Clinton who inspired our confidence. Each time we met, she impressed us with her knowledge and her competence.

Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 09:56 PM by JackORoses
If Edwards had gotten the endorsement he might have been able to make something out of it.

For Hill, this is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Iowans think for themselves.

31. Completely Predictable and A Complete Sham
Who here was really surprised by this sham endorsement? This sad poster with, admittedly, not enough to do during the weekdays, actually watched that sad excuse for a debate on Thursday. (You know, the one described on Hardball as an attempt to destroy the medium of television?) It was painfully obvious to me that the question regarding Mr. Obama's advisors being ex-Clintonistas was a complete set-up job by the moderator (one of the choosers here). She could hardly contain her amusement when asking the question. Luckily, Mr. Obama, as he always does, cooly smacked that attempted hack job smack out of the park. Shame on you, Ms. Moderator -- the kindest thing I can say to you is that you should decline television appearances in the future. Neither you nor your endorsee is ready for prime time.
