"Desperate" Romney defends Bush against Huckabee
oh, I love seeing these assholes defending the hated Bush. I can't wait for the general election.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/12/15/romney_hits_huckabee_for_criti.html

Sensing an opening in his desperate effort to retake the lead in Iowa, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on Saturday pounced on comments by former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee in which he characterized President Bush's foreign policy as an "arrogant bunker mentality."

(...)

"It sounds like something Barack Obama or John Edwards would say -- not what you hear from someone running for president as a Republican," he told reporters. Huckabee made the comments in the latest issue of the journal Foreign Affairs.

(...)

Huckabee's criticism of Bush -- and Romney's defense of the president -- could prove to be a tricky political moment for both men. Republicans who will participate in the Iowa caucus are largely supportive of the president and may be upset with Huckabee's strong language.

But the president remains very unpopular with independents who will vote in the New Hampshire primary just five days later. Romney's strong defense of the president could be a turn-off for some of them. In his comments, Romney made certain to stress that Bush's foreign policy has not been perfect.

"We were under-prepared and under-planned and understaffed," he said. "There is no question we weren't perfectly managed."

1. Huckabee appears to have knifed Romney expertly.
If Huckabee beats Romney in Iowa, Romney is all done.

3. Huckleberry is a conniving critter. I think in some ways that we all under-
estimate the guy. The remarks that indicate that he'll be easy to take down if he gets the nomination sound just a little overconfident to me. Don't sell this SOB short. He's a hell of a lot smarter than first (or second or third) glances would indicate.

2. And the Huckster seems to be overtaking Ghouliani in national polls.
Looks like even Republicans don't want more of the same.

4. The Bush establishment
I think, has been behind the spate of dirt digging and spinning against Huckabee. It could be, in any event, that going against the Bush favorites(who have divided that shrinking support!) means one might as well sweep up the whole chunk that things need a big change. This would be the very first cautious move away from dynasty control, some spark from a damp ember of independent ambition at least. If McCain was pretty successful last time in moving elements away from the Bushes there is a true core now of people who have had their fill of the actual horror.

Expect some spectacularly low ads and phone call campaigns to destroy Huckabee, because in many ways he will make the Bush farm team look bad when they can least afford it and ironically lead to the kind of party meltdown they were hoping for from Dems.

5. Rallying around Bush - Like kissing the burner on your stove.
Go for it Mitt - you're going down the toilet anyway.
