1. woudl've been a hell of a lot better if he'd resigned second term, and let Gore step in...
... thus winning in 2000...

3. I don't know if Gore would have gone through his personal transformation if this had happened
He is not the same person who ran in 2000. He's even better now. :)

6. That would have set a terrible precedent.
His impeachment set a bad enough one as is.

9. Bush's "election" has been a better precedent?
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 02:20 PM by villager
I think once Clinton realized he couldn't govern, he should've handed the reins to Gore...

Good question from the other post about whether Gore would've "transformed" to the same degree, however...

13. but he did govern effectively both during and after impeachment
and bush wasn't, as you noted, elected. It's just preposterous to suggest he should have stepped down.

14. I don't think it would've been as steal-able if Gore was the incumbent...
as for effectiveness, remind me again of the progressive initiatives Clinton passed in his second term?

16. not on the merits of the "charges," RKM, but after Clinton lied in public...
I think the country would've been better served with Gore finishing out his term...

And I think we'd *definitely* be better served now!

17. We've been told ad nauseum that no one wants to go through
impeachment proceedings again after what happened because of Clinton's bad behavior. Had he not lied to the nation and been impeached, that roadblock would not be there. I can't think of a more deserving person who should be impeached than the current wh resident, but no dice now.
I liked Bill but his actions from then still resonate and not in a good way.

8. The whole point of that exercise was to immunize the next president against impeachment.
The whole point of that exercise was to immunize the
next president (whom the Republicans were betting
would be a Republican president) against impeachment.

And it worked, in part thanks to our collaborators.

In many ways, Clinton was very, very bad for Democrats
and this is just one of the most-glaring ways.

15. In other words, the country would be better off now
if Bill Clinton never would have been president. Because of him and his Monica, impeachment is off the table. So, it is all Bill Clinton's fault that we can't impeach Bush.

21. Our long, national nightmare is finally over! ROFL
The lengths Clinton haters will go thru to blame them for any and everything is astounding.

Anybody that wouldn't have fought that disgraceful, Constitution-perverting impeachment doesn't deserve to call themselves an American. 'Is it bad for this country' not to extradite people who would have given in to an abuse of Constitutional authority? Yes, I think so.

So much twisting things around to fit blame to Bill. Here's a clue: Publicans were monsters. They would have found some other way to hit Bill if they hadn't fomented their semen-sniffing 'Constitutional crisis'.

Here's something else: If Bill had quit and Gore had taken over, GW would have won the 2000 election and then Clinton-haters would be on this board saying - go ahead, guess - that it was all Clinton's fault for not fighting a corrupt impeachment just to save himself the dishonor.

Heads Clinton loses, tails Clinton-haters win!

I'm thankful we had an impeachment. It showed how low Publicans will go. I'm proud of Hillary for toughing it out. I'm proud of my fellow Dems who were galvanized to rally around them against the real enemy. I couldn't be more contemptuous of the fair-weather Dems who turned away. I'm disgusted by the Dems that even today somehow blame Bill Clinton for it.
