John Edwards: DNC Chairman?
I know theres been a lot of discussion lately about chris dodd for senate majority leader. I wholeheartedly would support chris dodd for this position. in this presidential cycle we don't exactly have some major league contenders, we have a lot of really good contenders. granted, I wanted Al Gore but didn't get what I wanted, but we don't have anyone as earth shaking as Al Gore, FDR, or such. what we do have is a talent pool of really good go getters and all around achievers.

I'm not trying to rain on the edwards supporters at all, I think john edwards has done a great job re-inventing himself and really stepping outside of the beltway, but I just don't think he has what it takes in the general. HOWEVER, I DO think he has what it takes to take up the mantle of Howard Dean, my political hero, and really lead the party itself. I think that would be something john edwards could take over without any shame to him and only bring pride and dedication to that position.

if anything, this presidential election has really opened, I think, a lot of our eyes to who we want leading. chris dodd as majority leader would certainly bring some much needed back bone to the senate. or russ feingold. but real leadership who want to stand up and fight. howard dean has shown us we can win that way, and I think we are ready to demand that from our leadership. the DNC chairman is going to be a crucial position we need someone who is ready to fight for us just not in the beltway, but especially in the state and local levels.

and after howard dean has to vacate the leadership of the party as DNC Chairman, I think john edwards would be in a really good place to step up and take on that role.

lord knows if its someone like harold ford, we're screwed.

1. I don't think he'd ever do it.
And your OP will provoke cries of outrage. I don't think JE is anything like Howard who has a rare dedication to change, and who has done far more for change than Edwards. Anyway, Edwards wouldn't get it even if he wanted it. The new nominee will pretty much choose who gets it.

2. I like him better in the White House
Sorry, I had to say it. :)

But I can think of far worse choices for DNC Chair. Of course, the new President will have a lot of input into the selection. And I'm not sure Edwards would want the job.

3. I'm just talking here
just tossing ideas out.

more than anything, I think the next DNC chair is going to be a serious thing. if it falls to a DLC candidate, I think we're screwed. its not just about the presidency, its getting local and state candidates elected who will change the paradigm of the american mentality and public. thats a HUGE thing.

I'm supporting biden so call me prejudiced, I just don't think edwards has it to go the distance in the general. he's a good candidate and I think he's running a sharp and smart campaign.

just talking here.

4. Attorney General. I'm an Edwards supporter and want him for president but my second choice would
be as AG. He'd go after those corporate crooks for SURE!!!!

6. Fitzgerald
would be my top pick for AG. or John Mckay, one of the fired USA attorney's from up here in washington. he's got a good record.

either way, I'm not trying to provoke discord or outrage. I'm just looking ahead.

I hope edwards continues to be part of the larger scheme even if he doesn't win the nomination. since he doesn't have a congressional seat or governorship to fall back on like the other candidates do.

8. Fitzgerald is a Pug. I doubt anyone would fight for the little guy and clean up the JD like Edwards.

9. I hate to be a wet blanket here, but I've seem a LOT of threads
talking about how great Biden would be for XXX, Dodd for XXX, Obama for XXX, and so on. One thing we REALLY NEED is a bigger majority in the Senate! We're not going to get that by having current Senators leave to take other positions!

Maybe, AFTER THE ELECTION, if somehow we get a BIG majority in the Senate, one Dem Senator can leave to take another top spot, but ONLY if it'd a virtual certainty that he would be replaced by another Dem!

10. Bad Choice
John Edwards's first passion does not seem to be politics, it seems to be changing this country. Politics is a means to an end for him.

And while I'd love to see an AG go after corporate crooks, the current administration has left the Justice Department such a mess and his so called "war on terror" has created an impending crisis with regard to our civil rights. We really need an AG versed in these issues.

No, if JE isn't president, I'd rather see him heading up HUD or HHS. They aren't as splashy, but I think they're closer to his heart. I don't think he'd be offered it though, or take it if he was. If he is not our nominee, I expect him to become a bully for his causes (lobbying, pundit) or retire gracefully.
