Denison Mayor Nathan Mahrt From Iowa Endorses Barack Obama
Marht backs Obama

12/25/2007

Denison Mayor Nathan Mahrt on Wednesday announced his support for Barack Obama's campaign for president, citing Obama's unique ability to unite all Americans to bring about change people can believe in.

"Towns like Denison are rapidly changing, and our futures depend on leaders who will bring this country together and stand up to the special interests," said Mayor Mahrt. "Barack Obama, the only candidate who can unite Democrats and Republicans alike, will move us past the partisan fighting and bring Americans change we can believe in."

Mahrt was elected mayor of Denison in 2005, defeating an incumbent by a wide margin. He recently won re-election to a second term. According to the press release, he has focused on preparing Denison for the future through better housing, lower taxes and care for the area's poorest residents. Prior to serving as Denison's mayor, Mahrt, a leading advocate of a sustainable approach to immigration, fought and won a public battle to protect the rights of the city's first Latino contractor.

"I'm grateful to Mayor Mahrt for joining our campaign and look forward to working with him to build the kind of grassroots movement in Denison and across Iowa to succeed on caucus night," said Senator Obama.
